After dropping the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 9-2 (box score), the
Pioneers came back and defeated the visiting Puget Sound Loggers
2-1 (box
score) in game two. Nathalie Matson earned the complete game
victory.
The Loggers scored three early runs in game one. After Pioneer
pitcher Paige McFeeley (freshman, Boise, Idaho) issued a leadoff
walk to Logger second baseman Lindsay Fujita, Fujita was advanced
to second on a sacrifice. Back-to-back singles by Victoria Raeburn
and Stephanie Hatley followed by a bases-clearing triple by catcher
Valerie Barone scored three runs for the Loggers.
In the third inning, a leadoff single by Stephanie Hatley followed
by an RBI double by Hatley put the Loggers up 4-0.
In the fourth inning, Lindsay Fujita lead off the inning with a
triple to center, scoring on an offline throw to third base by
L&C, making it a 5-0 game.
The Loggers scored four more runs in the fifth. A single by
Carolyn Moore followed by back-to-back doubles by Meghan Watson and
Noelle Vallecorsa and RBI singles from Fujita and Raeburn
translated into a 9-0 Logger lead.
The Pioneers scored their runs in the bottom of the fifth. After
Sheree Miura (junior, Waipahu, Hawaii) reached on an error to lead
off the inning, Jamie Moon (sophomore, Baker, Ore.) took the next
pitch and smashed it into center. Jessica Mullins (sophomore,
Randle, Wash) followed with a hit to center that went over the
fielder's heads. Miura and Moon scored and Mullins legged the
hit into a triple.
The Loggers held on for a 9-2 victory.
The Loggers had 19 hits in the game, including six extra-base
hits. Lindsay Fujita went 4-4 in the game, scoring three runs.
Valerie Barone was 3-4 with 3RBI on two doubles and a triple.
Auriel Spielberg earned the complete-game victory. She allowed one
earned run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts, Paige
McFeeley took the loss, with all nine runs earned. She walked just
one and struck out nine.
In game two, Pioneer defense and the pitching of Nathalie Matson
(grad, Astoria, Ore.) led the Pioneers to a 2-1 victory.
The Pioneers scored in the third inning. Sheree Miura led off the
inning with a single up the middle. Jessica Mullins walked. After a
wild pitch, the Pioneers had runners on second and third with one
out. After a groundout to third, and then a routine ground ball to
the shortstop, the Loggers looked like they were going to get out
of the inning. The shortstop, however, threw a bad toss to first,
with the runner safe and Miura scoring on the error. The Pioneers
sent Mullins on the play, and she was thrown out at the plate,
ending the inning.
Matson got a chance to help out her own cause in the fifth. She
walked to start the inning. After Miura was hit by a pitch, Matson
was lifted for a pinch runner. The Pioneers two-on, no outs turned
to two on, two outs, and once again the Loggers looked like they
might work their way out of trouble. Laura Parker (junior,
Healdsburg, Calif.) came to the plate and laced a two-out single to
center to score the pinch runner on second and put the Pioneers up
2-0.
In the top of the sixth, the Loggers got a leadoff walk, but the
threat was quickly erased with a double play, one of three turned
by the Pioneer infield in the game. The Pioneers got out of the
inning still holding a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh, the Logger's Victoria Raeburn
battled at the plate, fouling off several pitches before singling
through the right side of the infield. After a Pioneer error
allowed her to advance to second with Carolyn Moore on first with
just one out, Meghan Watson singled to the outfield, scoring
Raeburn. After the Pioneer outfielders booted the ball, the runners
advanced to second and third with one out in a 2-1 game. Matson
induced a ground ball to Michaela Satter (sophomore, McKinleyville,
Calif.) at third, getting a crucial out without letting the runners
advance. A weak ground ball to Sarah DiSabatino (senior,
Pleasanton, Calif.) ended the game, giving the Pioneers a 2-1
victory over the Loggers.
Nathalie Matson earned the complete game victory. She allowed one
unearned run on six hits, walking one, striking out two. Andi
Doerflinger took the loss, allowing one earned run on four hits
with two walks and five strikeouts.
Laura Parker's hot hitting continued. She went 2-3 with an
RBI. Sheree Miura was on base twice, going 1-1 along with being hit
by a pitch.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday, hosting the Pacific
Lutheran Lutes at 12 noon at the Huston Sports Complex. Live
play-by-play will be available through sportsjuice.com. The weather
forecast for Sunday is very good so weather-related cancellations
of the webcast should not be a problem.
