Women's Basketball Defeats Willamette 61-43

The Pioneer women's basketball team defeated the visiting Willamette Bearcats 61-43 (box score) Saturday night at the Pamplin Sports Center. Allison Farr tallied 19 points, including scoring the 1,000th point of her Pioneer career.

The two teams played a fairly even first half, with five ties and six lead changes in the period. The Pioneers went ahead 20-18 on a layup by Laura Snider (senior, Colorado Springs, Colo.) with 4:46 remaining in the first half. A layup by Christina Herring (freshman, San Dimas, Calif.) closed out the first half scoring, giving the Pioneers a 27-22 advantage at the break.

The Pioneers scored the first six points of the second half, including a pair of layups by Kelly Vega (sophomore, Beaverton, Ore.), to give the Pioneers their first double-digit lead of the game. There were only four short periods of time in the duration of the game that Willamette managed to get the differential back into single digits, coming no closer than seven points, 35-28, with 12:38 remaining. Snider immediately answered with a three-pointer to put the Pioneers back up by ten. They held on for the 61-43 victory.

Allison Farr (senior, Lakeport, Calif.) followed her 18-point performance at George Fox Friday night with a 19-point game. Farr was 6-15 from the floor, but her biggest point of the night was her final freethrow with exactly 4:00 remaining in the game. The shot was the 1,000th point of Farr's Pioneer career. She joins teammate Crystal Castle (senior, Rocklin, Calif.) as one of eight players to ever reach that milestone in the Pioneer careers. Castle scored her 1,000th point in the December 8 game against Concordia.

Kim Kittell (sophomore, Tillamook, Ore.) had six assists with zero turnovers. She also scored six points with four rebounds. Crystal Castle scored nine points with five rebounds and four assists.

With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 7-8, 3-3 NWC. Willamette falls to 3-12, 1-5 NWC.

The Pioneers have three straight home games, including a pair at Pamplin next weekend. They host Puget Sound on Friday night, January 25, followed by Linfield on Saturday.
