The Pioneer women's basketball team lost on the road to the #16
George fox Bruins 58-41 (box score) Friday
night in Newberg. Allison Farr led the Pioneers with 18 points.
After the Bruins jumped out to a 10-2 lead, the Pioneers battled
back, putting up eight straight points to tie the game 10-10 with
10:40 left in the first half. Both teams dug in on defense, denying
the other on the offensive end, with neither team scoring for three
solid minutes. George Fox broke the stalemate, hitting their first
three-pointer of the game with 7:17 remaining in the first half to
take a 13-10 lead. A lay up by Allison Farr (senior, Lakeport,
Calif.) gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game, 14-13, with
five minutes remaining in the half. After another two scoreless
minutes, the Bruins retook the lead with a three-pointer, 15-14,
and would never trail again. The Bruins closed out the half on a
10-2 run, going into the break with a 23-16 lead.
In the second half, Kelly Vega (sophomore, Beaverton, Ore.) hit a
jumper eight seconds into the period to start things off for the
Pioneers, pulling them back within five, 23-18. The two teams
continued playing intense defense, with the Pioneers still trailing
by just five, 38-33 midway through the half. The Pioneers shots
stopped falling just as the Bruins offense started to heat up,
allowing George Fox to go on a 12-1 run to take a 50-34 lead with
just under six to play. The Pioneers could never get the momentum
back in their favor, with the Bruins holding on in the final
minutes for a 58-41 victory.
Allison Farr, battling the larger Bruin defenders, scored 12 of the
Pioneers' 16 first-half points. She finished the game with 18
points, going 7-14 from the field. Farr also had three rebounds,
three steals, three assists, and a block. Crystal Castle (senior,
Rocklin, Calif.) led the team with eight rebounds.
With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 6-8, 2-3 NWC. The Bruins,
ranked 16th in the latest d3hoops poll, are in sole possession of
first place, with a perfect 5-0 Conference mark and 13-1 overall
record.
