The Pioneer volleyball team dropped their home opener to the
visiting Corban College Warriors 28-30, 30-22, 30-25,
30-26 Tuesday night. Katherine Fiedler led the Pioneers with 11
kills.
The Pioneers took a 14-9 lead early in game one, only to have
Corban rally to tie the game at 19. A solo block by Katherine
Fiedler (freshman, San Diego, Calif.) put the Pioneers back in the
lead, but hardly in control. A service ace by Corban's Margo Wyatt
knotted the game at 25. Coran took a 26-25 lead when a kill by
Nicki Smith (senior, Brea, Calif.) tied the game at 26 and another
Fiedler block gave the Pioneers a 27-26 lead. The Pioneers' new
setter, Lara Smith (senior, Vashon Island, Wash.) closed out the
game with a sneak attack to earn the Pioneers a 30-28 victory.
In game two, Corban broke open a 10-10 deadlock with two
five-point runs to take a 21-14 lead and control of the match. They
held on for the 30-22 game vitory to tie the match a game a piece.
Corban opened game three with four straight points and
controlled the tempo throughout. Kills by Nicki Smith and Kelsey
Clark (junior, Estacada, Ore.) helped the keep the Pioneers within
two points midway through, but the hard-hitting Warriors kept
adding to their lead, ending with a 30-25 final score.
In game four, the Pioneers rallied from trailing by six early on
(10-4) to taking a one point lead 15-14 on a kill by Sara Kettler
(senior, Dana Point, Calif.). The Pioneers led 22-20 when a pair of
Pioneer miscues allowed Corban to tie the game 24-24. Corban edged
out to a two-point lead, 26-24, before back-to-back kills by Sara
Kettler and Andrea Chase (junior, Santa Rosa, Calif.) tied the game
back up at 26-26. Two Pioneer errors and a pair of Ashley Lange
kills helped Corban earn the 30-26 game win and match victory.
For the Warriors, Rashelle Davenport had 15 kills and 13 digs.
Chelsea Reeher had 12 kills and 13 digs. Ashley Lange had 15 kills.
For the Pioneers, Katherine Fiedler had another strong game,
with 11 kills, five solo blocks, and four block-assists. Sara
Kettler had 10 kills, two solo blocks, and four block-assists.
Jessamy Holland led the defense with 22 digs. Cayley Rasmussen
flirted with a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs.
With the win, Corban improves to 2-3 on the season. The Pioneers
fall to 1-4.
Lewis & Clark heads to Indiana to play in the Rose-Hulman
tournament this weekend. They will play a pair of matches Friday
