Buese Sets 1,500M Record, Chin Wins 400M To Lead Track & Field At GFU Last Chance Meet

Riley Buese broke an 18-year program record in the 1,500M in her final tune-up before Nationals

NEWBERG, Ore.—Senior Riley Buese set the program record in the women' 1,500M and junior Elsie Chin won the women's 400M, to lead Lewis & Clark College track & field at the George Fox Last Chance Meet on Thursday evening.Ā

The Pioneers had five student-athletes compete on Thursday in the final meet before NCAA DIII Nationals.Ā 
Ā 
In her final tune-up before Nationals, Buese set her ninth program record, to lead a trio of Pioneers in the women's 1,500M. She placed seventh out of 22 runners, with the six runners ahead of her coming from NCAA DI programs University of Portland or Oregon State University. Buese crossed the line in a PR time of 4:32.52 to break the previous program record by 4.34 seconds. Her time moved her into 44thĀ in NCAA DIII this season.Ā

Junior Madeleine Boyle came in 12thĀ in the 1,500M with a time of 4:42.59. Fellow junior Miriam Reside crossed the line in 4:58.85. The three Lewis & Clark runners placed first, second and third among NCAA DIII student-athletes in the race.Ā

Chin defeated five other runners to win the 400M. She posted a time of 58.95 to cross the finish line 0.55 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Alexis Leao of the University of Portland.Ā

In her final race of the day, Chin finished third out of seven competitors in the 200M. Chin posted a time of 26.57.Ā

Senior JT Willis was the lone Pioneer to compete on the men's side and in the field events. He finished seventh out of 10 throwers in the javelin. The senior earned a spot in the Finals after launching the javelin 51.65M (169-05 Feet) on his third throw of the prelims.Ā

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Buese's time in the 1,500M was a PR by 8.02 seconds. She moved from sixth to first all-time and broke Amanda Phillips program mark of 4:36.86 – which was set in 2007.Ā 
  • Willis and Boyle, who graduated a year early, each competed for the final time in a Pioneers uniform on Thursday night.Ā 
  • Chin finishes her junior season 69thĀ in DIII in the 400M Hurdles. Boyle capped off her final season in 68thin the 3K Steeplechase.Ā 
  • Buese will learn that her entry to the NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field National Championship Meet has been accepted on Friday afternoon. She currently sits third in the Nation in the 10K and 11thĀ in the 5K.Ā 
  • Junior Malia Heien sits on the bubble in the 800M. She owns the 28th-fastest time in D3 this season. The top-22 accepted entries earn spots at Nationals.Ā

Buese will travel to the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the 2025 NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field National Championship Meet. The meet begins on Thursday, May 22 and runs through May 24.Ā
