Riley Buese broke her own conference record in the 10K on Friday and juniors
Elsie Chin and
Noah Nelson each ran top-five times in program history on Saturday, as a small contingent of Lewis & Clark track & field student-athletes competed at the Stanford Invite and Mike Fanelli Classic.
The Pioneers were competing against fields made up of high-level NCAA DI and DII competitors.
STANFORD INVITE
For the second-straight season, Buese broke the Northwest Conference record in the women's 10,000M at the Stanford Invite. She shattered her own program and conference record in the event Friday night with a blistering time of 34:16.33. Her time put her in 14
th out of 34 runners. She broke her own PR by 39.40 seconds, becoming the first student-athlete in NWC history to break 35-minutes. Her time moved her into second place in NCAA DIII this season.
Nelson provided a PR of his own to set him up as one of the favorites at the Northwest Conference Championship Meet. The junior placed fourth out of seven in his 800M heat with a new outdoor PR of 1:52.99. He beat two runners from NCAA DI Washington State University and one runner from NCAA DII Academy of the Arts in his heat. His new PR (0.20 seconds) moves him from sixth to fifth all-time in program history. It's the fastest time by a Pioneer in the event since 1978.
Sophomore
Keegan Zaso competed in the invite section of the triple jump on Saturday. He placed 13
th against a strong field of jumpers. His first jump carried him 13.70M (44-11.50 Feet). It marked his second-best leap of the season.
MIKE FANELLI CLASSIC
Chin and sophomore
Harrison Fung both had the chance to run the 400M hurdles on both days and junior
Malia Heien ran a season-best time in the 800M.
Chin and Fung both raced on Friday at the Stanford Invite and then improved their times on Saturday at the Mike Fanelli Classic.
On Friday, Chin ran the third-fastest time in program history in the 400M Hurdles with a PR time of 1:05.95. She beat her previous PR by 0.13 seconds and finished 22
nd out of 23 runners. The junior came back on Saturday and shaved off another 0.36 seconds to place sixth out of 20. She crossed the line in a new PR time of 1:05.59 to finish second out of eight in her heat.
Fung also completed the double. He turned in a time of 56.27 on Friday to place 23
rd out of 27 runners. His time was the second-best of his season thus far. On Saturday, Fung came in second out of 11 competitors. His time of 55.06 is the second-best of his career/season.
Heien put together a season-best time in the 800M. After being unable to compete on Friday, the junior came out and placed 55
th out of 171 with a time of 2:14.49. Her mark was the second-best of her career and the fourth-fastest recorded time by a Lewis & Clark runner. She owns the program record of 2:13.31 – which she set at last year's Oregon Twilight Meet.
