Lacrosse Jumps On Whitworth Early, Earns First-Ever NWC Road Win

Mack Searle posted three goals, two assists and four draw controls in the win

SPOKANE, Wash.—Lewis & Clark College women's lacrosse bounced back in a big way, as they used huge first and third quarters, to earn their first road Northwest Conference win in program history.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā 
Sophomore Sage Swegle recorded a single-game, program record seven goals and added an assist, to help the Pioneers earn their first-ever win over the Pirates.Ā 
Ā 
Swegle scored seven goals on 10 shots (nine on target) and added a team-leading three caused turnovers.Ā 
Ā 
Sophomores Aviana Gonzales and Finley Allen and first year Mack Searle all added hat tricks. Gonzales and Searle each chipped in two assists. Searle recorded a team-leading four draw controls, to go along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.Ā 
Ā 
Sophomore Ally Vargas-Buell posted her first career multi-goal game. Vargas-Buell scored on both of her shots and added a caused turnover.

Junior Kate Meinhard and Evelyn Burnett each chipped in one goal apiece. Meinhard, who missed the last two games due to injury, posted a career-high four assists and led the team with six draw controls.Ā

First year goalie Katlin McRae came up huge with 12 saves. She posted six saves in the first quarter and added four more in the third – to help Lewis & Clark stretch their lead.Ā

Lewis & Clark dominated the Pirates in the opening stanza. They raced out to a 7-2 lead, despite being outshot 9-8.Ā 
Ā 
After falling behind 2-0 in the opening 1:55, Lewis & Clark responded with five goals in a 2:58 span. Swegle opened the scoring at 9:31 and Allen tied the game 53 seconds later. Vargas-Buell gave Lewis & Clark the lead for good, with a man-up goal just past the midway point of the quarter (7:27). Searle and Vargas-Buell scored goals seven seconds apart to make it 5-2 with 6:33 remaining.Ā

Swegle added two more goals before the end of the quarter to complete her hat trick and make it 7-2.Ā

Campbell Vincent scored the opening two goals of the second to make it 7-4. Lewis & Clark responded with back-to-back goals from Gonzales and a man-up goal from Swegle to give the Pioneers a 10-4 lead with 5:41 to go before halftime. Whitworth added two goals in the final 2:16 to shave their deficit to 10-6 at halftime.Ā Ā

The Pioneers seemingly put the game away with another big quarter in the third. Lewis & Clark doubled up the hosts 6-3, to extend their advantage to 16-9.Ā

Burnett (man-up), Allen and Swegle all scored in the first 5:04 of the second half to make it 13-6. After a Whitworth tally, Meinhard and Searle added insurance goals to push the advantage to 15-7. Swegle added a goal sandwiched between two Whitworth markers to give Lewis & Clark a seven-goal leading heading to the fourth.Ā

Searle would open the scoring in the fourth but Whitworth added four goals in a row to cut the deficit to 17-13 with 10:56 to play. Swegle and Allen scored goals two minutes apart to turn the tide and give Lewis & Clark a 19-13 edge. Gonzales closed out the scoring with 1:06 to play to seal the win.Ā

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Whitworth outshot the Pioneers 34-28 but McRae made 12 saves and Whitworth's two goalies combined for just four.Ā 
  • Swegle's seven goals broke the former program record of six goals in a game which had been recorded four times before. Swegle (2x), Gonzales and Meinhard all have recorded six goals in a game in their careers.Ā 
  • The Pioneers held edges in ground balls (18-9), turnovers (20-14) and finished 5-7 on free position shots. Whitworth ended the game 3-7.Ā 
  • Gonzales (72 points), Swegle (54 goals, 62 points) and Searle (54 points) all reached major season milestones on Saturday. Gonzales is the first player in program history to post 70+ points in a season and Swegle is the first to reach 50+ goals.Ā 
  • McRae has posted double-digit saves six times in 14 starts this season. She has recorded 10+ saves in each of the past two games and three times in five NWC contests.Ā 
  • With the win, Lewis & Clark put themselves back into playoff contention. The Pioneers (3-2) are currently a half-game back of third-place Linfield University/Willamette University (4-2) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the NWC Tournament.Ā
