WALLA WALLA, Wash.—Despite six goals from sophomore
Sage Swegle, Lewis & Clark College women's lacrosse fell 19-11 to host Whitman College on Sunday afternoon at James Hayner Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The host Blues outscored the Pioneers 6-2 in both the first and fourth quarters, to earn their fifth conference win in six tries.
Swegle posted her second-straight double hat trick with six of the team's 11 goals. She netted six goals on 10 shots (nine on target) and added two ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover.
First year
Mack Searle was the only other Pioneer to net multiple goals. She chipped in two goals and a ground ball.
Sophomores
Aviana Gonzales and
Evelyn Burnett and junior
Kate Meinhard all added a goal and an assist. Gonzales led the team with two helpers and Meinhard paced the team with seven draw controls.
On the defensive side, sophomore
Lauren Elliott recorded a team-high four ground balls and chipped in three draw controls and one caused turnover. First year
Kaedance Stubbs chipped in two ground balls.
Sophomore
Zoey Hamel-Hyland came off the bench and recorded a season-high seven saves. She played a season-high 41:39 and made seven saves on 17 shots. First year
Kaitlin McRae took the loss after making two saves in the opening 18:21.
The two teams traded goals to start the game, before Whitman went on a 5-0 run to grab a 6-1 advantage. Swegle scored both goals for the Pioneers in the first quarter with Meinhard and Gonzales being credited with assists.
Lewis & Clark cut into the deficit in the second stanza. After falling behind 8-2 early in the quarter, Lewis & Clark scored four of the final five goals before halftime.
Burnett and Searle posted man-up goals and Gonzales and Swegle added tallies of their own to cut the deficit to 9-6 with 4:56 to go before halftime. The Pioneers didn't get another shot off in the final 4:56, but Hamel-Hyland held the hosts scoreless for the final 11:39 of the half.
Whitman started the second half strong with back-to-back goals, before Swegle scored a pair of goals to get Lewis & Clark back within three (11-8) with 5:33 left in the quarter. Whitman scored two goals sandwiched around a Swegle tally, to go into the fourth leading 13-9.
The hosts scored the first two goals of the fourth and four of the first five to grab control back. Meinhard (free-position) and Searle scored the Pioneers lone goals of the fourth quarter.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Whitman earned a 39-19 edge in total shots, 21-12 advantage on draw controls and 18-14 lead in ground balls.
- Swegle is sitting on 98 career goals after today's contest. The sophomore forward is first in the NWC this season with 60 goals.
- Lewis & Clark finished 14-15 on clears on Sunday. The team went a combined 51-56 (91%) this week on clears.
- Hamel-Hyland doubled her season total for saves (seven) in Sunday's contest.
- The Blues, who currently sit second in the NWC Standings, are one of three NWC teams Lewis & Clark has yet to defeat (Willamette, George Fox and Whitman).

Lewis & Clark will return to Oregon for their final weekend of the NWC regular season. The Pioneers will travel to Pacific University (1 p.m.) on Saturday and league-leaders George Fox University (1 p.m.) on Sunday.
