O'Leary Sets Program Record For Wins To Lead Softball To DH Split in Florida

Maggie O'Leary threw her third collegiate shutout to earn her 29th career win

CLERMONT, Fla.—Lewis & Clark College softball junior Maggie O'Leary set the program record for career victories (29), to help the Pioneers earn a doubleheader split on Tuesday in their final set of contests at The Spring Games.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 3, Wisconsin-Platteville 0
#7 Wisconsin-Oshkosh 8, Lewis & Clark 5
(Lewis & Clark 16-2)
(Wisconsin-Platteville 8-3)
(Wisconsin-Oshkosh 14-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers faced their stiffest competition to date on Tuesday and put together a pair of strong performances against teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

O'Leary set the program record for career wins in the opener, when she threw her third collegiate shutout. In a rare matchup of two schools with the nickname Pioneers, O'Leary held UW-Platteville to four hits and she added three strikeouts to set the program record with her 29th career win.

The Pioneers took on their first nationally-ranked team of the season in game two and went toe-to-toe with the seventh-ranked Titans. Lewis & Clark erased a 4-0 deficit to tie the game but UW-Oshkosh scored three late runs on balls that barely fell in front of Pioneers defenders.

PLATTEVILLE RECAP

O'Leary worked her way out of two early jams and retired the final 12 batters she faced, to help Lewis & Clark secure a winning trip with their fourth win in five games.

The junior allowed just one double and three singles and struck out four in her third collegiate shutout.

Senior Sam Gildersleeve and junior Madison Scroggins each posted two hits. Gildersleeve finished 2-4 with a run scored and Scroggins added two hits and a stolen base in three at-bats. Junior Gina Ozuna added a hit and two runs scored and graduate student Mari Alvarez registered a hit and two RBI.

Lewis & Clark scratched across a single run in the top of the first. Ozuna and Emily Patton opened the game with back-to-back singles and both runners moved up an extra base as Ozuna beat the throw to third base. Alvarez plated Ozuna with an RBI groundout to second base.

Platteville had their best chance to score in the bottom of the first. Mia Savage opened the inning with a single and Allison Peters followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. The next batter hit a fly ball to right field and Gildersleeve made the catch and then fired a strike home to get the runner trying to tag from third base. O'Leary retired the next batter with a groundout to get out of the jam.

Alvarez drove in her second run of the game in the third. Ozuna led off with a walk and Patton followed with a hit by pitch. Alvarez delivered an RBI single to center field to plate Ozuna. Gildersleeve reached on a bunt single to load the bases but reliever Morgan Erickson retired the next three batters to keep the game 2-0.

Platteville had their final chance to score in the third. The "hosts" led off the inning with a single and added a two-out single to put runners at the corners with two down. O'Leary induced a line out to second to close out the frame.

Lewis & Clark closed out the scoring in the seventh. Gildersleeve led off with a single and stole second. She took third on a Lola Jarrette sac bunt and raced home on a Cami Restagno RBI groundout.

#7 OSHKOSH RECAP

The Titans used four two-run innings, including two in their final two at-bats, to earn an 8-5 win over Lewis & Clark in the Pioneers final game of their trip.

Junior McKenna Zehnder, Scroggins and Gildersleeve each posted two hits to lead the Pioneers offensively. Scroggins went 2-2 with two runs, one RBI, a walk and a double. Gildersleeve finished 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI and Zehnder chipped in two hits in three at-bats.

Junior Charlize Pope got the start in the circle and went 2.2 innings. Pope was charged with seven hits and four runs and struck out two. O'Leary came on in relief and scattered seven hits, one walk and four runs over the final 4.1 innings.

Oshkosh scored twice in the first and added two, two-out runs in the top of the third to grab a 4-0 lead.

The Pioneers began their comeback effort in the bottom of the third. Scroggins opened the inning with a double down the right-field line, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Patton sacrifice fly.

Lewis & Clark cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fourth. Gildersleeve led off with a single, took second a passed ball, third on a Makena Dahir sac bunt and scored on a Harper Campanella sacrifice fly.

The Pioneers tied the game with two more runs in the fifth. Zehnder (single) and Scroggins (walk) opened the inning to put two on with no outs. With one down, Patton put down a two-strike sac bunt and the catcher threw the ball into right field allowing Jarrette, who had pinch ran, to score from second. Gildersleeve beat out a two-out, infield RBI single to score Scroggins to make it 4-4.

Oshkosh took the lead in the sixth thanks to some perfectly placed hits. With two down, the Titans blooped a double just between the Pioneers shortstop and left fielder to put a runner in scoring position. The next batter lined a double off the Pioneers' third baseman's glove to retake the lead. The Titans added an insurance run when Moran Rau blooped an RBI double into right field that just fell off the glove of a diving Gildersleeve.

The Pioneers almost tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Restagno started the rally with a one-out double and Zehnder followed by beating out an infield single to put runners at the corners. Scroggins followed with an RBI single off the first baseman's glove to plate pinch runner Pippi Jepsen. Titans reliever Brianna Bougie retired the next two batters to keep the game 6-5.

Oshkosh added two more, two-out runs in the top of the seventh. O'Leary retired the first two batters but Oshkosh kept the inning going with another bloop double down the left-field line that fell just between three Pioneers defenders. Sophie Wery followed with a two-run homer over the left-field fence to make it 8-5.

With the Pioneers down to their final out, Dahir reached on a hit by pitch and Campanella hit a deep fly to right field, but the Titans outfielder jumped up and made the catch to close out the game.
