Men's Tennis Moves To 3-0 in NWC With Win Over Boxers

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore.—Senior Matt Chio and sophomores Noah Sutin and Joey Lyon all went 2-0, to help Lewis & Clark College men's tennis cap off a 3-0 weekend to start Northwest Conference play.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lewis & Clark won six of the nine matches to wrap up the weekend atop the NWC Standings at 3-0.Ā

Lewis & Clark took the doubles point for the fifth-consecutive match.Ā

The Pioneers second doubles pair of Sutin and Lyon opened the match with a 6-4 win over Joshua Kyle Dela Cruz and Ryley Chang. Chio and junior Spencer Loucks combined for a 6-3 win at third doubles over Aidan Rooney and Alexander Kinoshita to secure the doubles point. In the final doubles match to finish, Pacific's Jonathan Nguyen and Dawson Hose secured a narrow 7-5 win over juniors Wade McDermott and Kai Wills.Ā

Lewis & Clark secured the match victory with wins at the top-three singles spots.Ā

Sutin earned a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 win over Dela Cruz to make it 2-0 Pioneers.Ā

Lyon notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Joshua Matabuena to push the lead to 3-0.Ā

Pacific earned their first point of the day at fourth singles. Nguyen earned an extremely tight 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) win over McDermott to cut the deficit to 3-1.Ā

Chio clinched the match win at third singles. The senior defeated Kinoshita 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 at third singles to make it 4-1.Ā

First year Arnav Bishnoi captured his first victory of the day at sixth singles. He earned a three-set 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over Hose.Ā

In the final match to finish, Rooney defeated Wills 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles.Ā

  • Lewis & Clark won 24 of 27 matches across three conference matches this weekend.Ā 
  • Chio led all Pioneers players this weekend with five wins. He went 2-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.Ā 
  • The Pioneers secured their third-straight win over the Boxers on Sunday. Pacific had won seven-straight in the series before Lewis & Clark swept the season series last season with a pair of 6-3 wins.Ā
