Football Receives Votes In Both National Polls For First Time This Season

The Pioneers are 4-0 for the 10th time in program history

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College football received votes in both National Polls for the first time this season, after they earned a 58-21 win over the University of Puget Sound on Saturday.Ā

The Pioneers doubled their points in the D3football.com Top-25 this week. After receiving a program-record seven points last week, the Pioneers jumped to 15 points overall and received the fifth-most votes of teams outside the top-25. Lewis & Clark earned points in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) DIII Coaches Poll for the first time this season. Football picked up 12 points in the AFCA Poll.Ā

Lewis & Clark is 4-0 for the first time since 2012 and the 10thĀ time in program history. The Pioneers are one of 24 teams left in NCAA DIII with an undefeated record.Ā Ā

With a win on Saturday against rival Willamette, the program can move to 5-0 for the seventh time in program history and only the second time (2011) since 1963. The Pioneers have won a program-record seven-straight Wagon Wheel Rivalry Games – including a 35-7 win over the Bearcats on Senior Day last Fall.Ā

A large part of football's success to this point has been their turnover margin. Lewis & Clark sits fifth in the nation with a 2.00 turnover margin per contest. They have recorded seven interceptions, including five against Puget Sound on Saturday, and added three fumble recoveries. On the offensive side of the ball, Lewis & Clark has thrown just one interception in 122 pass attempts and posted one fumble. They sit sixth in the nation with their two turnovers lost thus far and 27thĀ in turnovers gained.Ā

The Pioneers also rank in the top-10 in DIII in: fourth-down conversion defense (6th – 10%), passing efficiency (7th – 184.80), third-down conversion rate (7th – 55.3%) and punt-return defense (9th).Ā

The Pioneers will travel to Salem to take on Willamette on Saturday at 1 p.m.Ā
