HOW IT HAPPENED

In what turned out to be an extremely tight finish, Lewis & Clark placed fifth out of nine teams at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic. The Pioneers sat tied for second after Day One and ultimately finished just 12 strokes behind team champions George Fox University (660, +76). Lewis & Clark hosted the two-day tournament at the Lake Oswego Country Club.Ā

Jani picked up her second-straight, second-place finish at an NWC Conference event. She posted the lowest round of the tournament by any player, when she shot a 75 (+2) on Day One. Jani came back with an 84 (+11) on Monday. Her two-day total of 159 (+13) put her in a tie for second-place with Pacific University's Bead Boonta.Ā

Denton joined Jani in the top-10. She carded an 83 (+10) on Sunday. Denton moved up into the top-10 and five spots overall on Monday when she posted an 84 (+11). Her score of 167 (+21) tied her with Whitman University's Beatrice Archer for seventh overall.Ā

First year
Darwyn Kormany put together one of the best tournaments of her collegiate career thus far. Kormany placed second on the team and tied for 10
thĀ overall on Day One with an 82 (+7). The first year notched an 89 (+16) on Day Two to finish in a tie for 18
thĀ overall. She shot a tournament score of 171 (+25).Ā

Kimber Yoder was the lone Lewis & Clark player to improve their score from Sunday to Monday. She registered an 88 (+15) on Day One. Yoder came back with an 87 (+14) on Day Two to finish in a tie for 23
rdĀ overall. The first year recorded a score of 175 (+29).Ā

Sophomore
Julia Klenk finished 32
ndĀ overall. She placed fourth on the team on Sunday with a round of 88 (+15). Klenk tacked on a 95 (+22) to close the tournament with a score of 183 (+37).Ā

BY THE NUMBERS
- Jani and Denton each posted their second career top-10 finishes at an NWC event. Jani finished second out of 39 golfers at last year's NWC Championship in April. Denton placed in the top-eight at the NWC Fall Classic for a second-straight season.Ā
- Lewis & Clark sat tied for second on Day One with a team score of +36 (328). They were just nine strokes behind eventual champions George Fox (+27, 319). The Pioneers score of 344 (+52) on Monday was the highest score among the top-five teams in the standings.Ā Ā
- It's the first time two Pioneers women's golfers have finished in the top-10 at the same NWC event since the 2017 NWC Championship. Annie McCutchan (t-7th) and Claire Burke (t-9th) led Lewis & Clark to a second-place finish in the team standings.Ā
- Twelve-time defending NWC Champions George Fox University (+76) won the team title by four strokes. Pacific University (+80), Whitman (+82) and Whitworth (+88) all finished lessĀ than 10Ā strokes ahead of the Pioneers. The conference champion will be determined by overall strokes at the conclusion of the three tournaments.Ā
- George Fox's Katelyn Lam won the medalist title with a two day score of 153 (+7). She posted the lowest score on Monday with a 76 (+3).Ā
- Lewis & Clark finished third in the field with their 3.64 average (+30) on Par 3s and placed tied for third with 64 pars.
- Jani tied for the lead,Ā out of 39 golfers, on Par 3s (3.29 average, +2) and placed third onĀ Par 5s (5.22, +2) and tied for eighth on Par 4s (4.73, +8). She also finished tied for second in the field with four birdies.Ā
- Denton led Lewis & Clark with her 16 pars (t-7th) and finished tied for sixth on Par 5 averages (5.33, +4).Ā
- The Pioneers fifth-place finish at the NWC Fall Classic was their best as a program since they placed third overall in 2018.Ā Ā
WHAT'S NEXTĀ
Ā
Both golf teams wrapped up their Fall season with the NWC Fall Classic. They will return to action in February when the team begins their Spring season.Ā
