THE BASICS
Linfield College 2, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 13-14-1)
(Linfield 12-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a rare midweek non-conference game against a conference opponent, Linfield scratched across an unearned run in the fifth and seventh innings to hand the Pioneers a loss in their non-conference finale. Both teams elected to go with a Bullpen Game with the teams combining to use 13 pitchers across nine innings.
Junior
Kyle Wilsie was the lone Pioneer to throw multiple innings on Tuesday. The righty went two innings and scattered one hit and one walk, while striking out two.
Senior
Brett Pierson (one hit) got the start and struck out one in a scoreless first. Senior
Tal Jones took over from there and got a big strikeout with the bases loaded in the second to keep the score 0-0.
Wilsie pitched the third and fourth innings before handing the ball over to freshman
Felix Gibeault. The righty gave up three hits in the fifth but would have gotten out of the inning unscathed if not for a Pioneers throwing error.
With the scored tied 1-1, freshman
Caden Hodina made his second-straight appearance out of the pen and allowed one hit in a scoreless sixth. Freshman
Connor Broschard made his third collegiate appearance on the mound in the seventh. He gave up back-to-back singles to start the frame and both runners moved up on a ground out. Broschard struck out the next batter but Linfield scored a run with two outs on a Pioneers throwing error. First baseman
Ryan Sanderson picked up the errant throw and threw home to
John Delaney to retire the trail runner and keep the score 2-1.
Freshman
Bret Potter was the Pioneers final pitcher. He gave up a one-out triple but struck out the final two batters in the bottom of the eighth to keep the game at 2-1.
Offensively, Lewis & Clark managed just two singles and added seven walks. Freshman
Eli Steinhaus and Potter recorded the Pioneers lone two hits.
Lewis & Clark scored their lone run in the third. Delaney and Steinhaus opened the inning with back-to-back walks and
Brandon Gonzaga put down a sac bunt to move both runners up 90 feet. After
Gavin Mangano worked a walk to load the bases,
Brennen Davis drove in his 21
st run of the season with a grounder to third that plated Delaney. Linfield reliever Jackson Koons posted a ground out to first to leave two runners in scoring position.
The Pioneers had their best chance to score again in the eighth inning. Steinhaus led off with a walk and moved to second on a one-out Potter single. The Pioneers put runners on the corners with two down when Davis beat a relay throw to first to avoid a double play. Gavin Ludlow recorded a ground out to second to leave the tying run at third base.
Jakob Ghammachi worked a walk to lead off the ninth but Linfield closer Brian Mannion retired the next three batters to finish the game.
