Baseball Uses Pair of Comebacks To Earn Sweep of Loggers

Luke Bass hit two homers and drove in five runs on Saturday

TACOMA, Wash.—Lewis & Clark baseball pulled off a pair of huge comebacks in game one and used a 9-run top of the seventh, to erase a smaller deficit, in game two, to earn a doubleheader sweep of host University of Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 11, Puget Sound 10
Lewis & Clark 10, Puget Sound 6
(Lewis & Clark 15-14-1, 6-8)
(Puget Sound 13-17, 5-9)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers erased deficits of 7-1 and 10-7 (in the ninth inning) in game one to snap a three-game losing streak and came back from a 3-1 deficit in the second game to earn their second doubleheader sweep of the Loggers this season.

Junior Will Heron delivered the go-ahead two-run, two-out single in the top of the ninth inning in game one to give the Pioneers their only lead of the contest. He added the go-ahead two-run double in the top of the seventh in game two to cap off a four-RBI day. Senior Luke Bass and junior Brennen Davis each posted five RBI apiece, as the Pioneers three-four-five hitters finished the day with seven runs scored and 14 RBI.

GAME ONE RECAP

Lewis & Clark dug themselves out of a 7-1 hole after three innings to tie the game at 7-7, but went into the ninth trailing 10-7 after Puget Sound scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Davis worked a bases loaded walk, Bass drove in a run with an RBI ground out and Heron ripped a two-run single to right field with two down to help the Pioneers snap a three-game losing streak.

Bass carried the Pioneers offense through the early innings. The senior blasted a solo home run and two-run shot and finished the game 2-5 with two runs and four RBI. Davis added a single, two runs and three RBI and freshman Michael Aikawa went 3-4 with a run scored.

Senior Brett Pierson battled in one of his most difficult starts of the year. After giving up seven runs in the first three innings, he managed to pitch into the sixth and finished with a final line of 5.2 innings pitched, six hits, five walks and seven runs scored. Pierson added four strikeouts to go over 200 for his career (203).

Junior Kyle Wilsie went 2+ innings and kept the Loggers scoreless until they struck for three runs (two earned) with two down in the eight. Freshman Shane Buchbinder earned his first collegiate victory by getting the final out of the eighth – a line out to left with two men on. Senior Anthony Clerici worked around a two-out single to pitch a scoreless ninth and earn the save.

Puget Sound jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings thanks to five runs in the first and two more in the third. Bass provided the lone early highlight for the Pioneers with a long leadoff home run to start the second.

Bass made it 7-3 in the sixth. Brandon Gonzaga was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame but traded places with Davis on a fielder's choice. Bass came through with two outs when he crushed his second homer of the day.

Lewis & Clark struck for their first four-run inning of the game in the seventh. With the Loggers going to the bullpen, the Pioneers scored four runs on five hits.

Jakob Ghammachi and Aikawa started the inning with back-to-back singles and both players moved up 90 feet on a Justin Cavagnaro ground out. Senior Jack Savant made it 7-4 with an RBI single and Gonzaga added one of his own to cut the deficit to two. After a second ground out, Davis singled to center field to score Savant and Gonzaga with a two-run single.

Wilsie was cruising until two outs in the bottom of the eighth. He retired the first five batters he faced before issuing a one-out walk in the eighth. With two down, the Loggers worked a walk and then both runners came in on a Drew Kamihara triple, that also saw Kamihara score on an error.

The Pioneers weren't going to go down without a fight. Cavagnaro and pinch-hitter Joaquin Sandoval singled to lead off the ninth inning. With one down, Gavin Mangano singled to load the bases. Davis worked a full-count walk to score Cavagnaro and bring the Pioneers back within 10-8. Bass made it a one-run game with an RBI groundout but also brough the Loggers within one out of winning. Heron calmly fell behind in the count before lofting a single to right field to easily score Mangano and Davis.

Clerici allowed one single in the ninth before striking out the final batter to secure the win.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Pioneers scored first but found themselves trailing 3-1 into the seventh. Lewis & Clark used a nine-run top of the seventh to secure the sweep.

Davis, Heron and Aikawa all drove in a pair of runs and freshmen Bret Potter and Eli Steinhaus each added two hits and two runs scored. Sandoval, who started in the two-hole, went 2-4 with a run scored and two walks.

Freshman Owen Eisen earned his third collegiate victory by going the opening 6.1 innings. He struck out a career-high seven batters and allowed 11 hits and five earned runs. Junior Luke Ritter allowed two hits and one earned run over the final 2.2 innings to close out the game.

After leaving the bases loaded in the first, Lewis & Clark scratched across a single run in the second. With one out, Potter and Steinhaus recorded back-to-back hits and Sandoval worked a two-out walk to load the bases. Potter scampered home on a passed ball to give the Pioneers their second lead of the day.

The Loggers tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo home run and added a second solo shot and a two-out RBI single to make 3-1 after three.

Despite putting runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, Lewis & Clark couldn't score any more runs against Loggers starter Joe Schwab.

The Pioneers found their offensive stride again in the seventh. Lewis & Clark used five hits, five walks and a Loggers error to score their most runs in a single-inning this season (nine).

Steinhaus opened the frame with a walk. With one out, Sandoval singled and Davis reached on an error to load the bases. Bass made it 3-2 with an RBI single to right field and Heron added a go-ahead two-run double to right field to chase the first Puget Sound reliever. Ghammachi made it five Pioneers in a row to reach with a walk to load the bases and Aikawa delivered a two-run double to center to push the lead to 6-3. Potter added a third walk to reload the bases and end the second UPS reliever's day. All three runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch (7-3) and Steinhaus walked for the second time in the inning. Gonzaga made it 8-3 with a sac fly to center and in the process ended a streak of eight-straight batters reaching. After a Sandoval walk loaded the bases for a fifth time, Davis ripped a double to center field to make it 10-3.

Eisen ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning and gave way with the bases loaded and one out. Ritter retired the first batter, gave up a single and then induced a fly out to center to keep the score at 10-5.

The Loggers added a final run with a two-out homer in the ninth (10-6) but that's as close as they would get.
