Strong Pitching Leads Pioneers Past Red-Hot Sagehens

Freshman Cade Hodina went six innings to earn his first collegiate start

CLAREMONT, Calif.—Lewis & Clark College baseball held host Pomona-Pitzer College's high-scoring offense to a season-low two runs on Sunday, to earn a 10-2 victory in their final game of a four-game California road trip.

THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 10, Pomona-Pitzer 2
(Lewis & Clark 2-1-1)
(Pomona Pitzer 5-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshmen Caden Hodina, sophomore Nate Kerr and junior Brennen Davis combined to hold the Sagehens to just four hits and two runs in Pomona-Pitzer's second loss in seven games this season.

Hodina, who was making his first collegiate start and collegiate debut, did a phenomenal job shutting down a Sagehens team that came in averaging 8.33 runs per game (50 in six contests). The freshman struggled with his control early but limited the hosts to two hits and one run over six innings. Hodina struck out three, walked six and hit one batter.

Kerr was the first man out of the pen. The Birthday Boy went two innings and scattered two hits, one run and struck out one. Davis moved from center field to the mound for the ninth and struck out one batter during a 1-2-3 inning.

Both teams struggled with their control in the contest but Lewis & Clark did a much better job taking advantage of the Pomona-Pitzer pitchers' wildness.

Junior Will Heron went 1-4 with three RBI and a walk. Davis finished with a double, two runs scored, two RBI and a pair of walks. Sophomore Brandon Gonzaga tacked on two hits, two runs and two walks. Senior Jakob Ghammachi registered a pair of extra-base hits, a run scored, two RBI and a walk.

After both teams left three runners on through two innings, Lewis & Clark struck for three runs in the top of the third on just one hit. Freshman Michael Aikawa worked the first of his three walks to start the rally. Davis followed with a walk and senior Luke Bass looped a single into center field to load the bases. Pomona starter Ethan Collins couldn't find the strike zone against the next two hitters and Heron and Ghammachi each worked RBI walks. Senior John Delaney made it 3-0 when he drove a hard grounder to the edge of the grass in right and the second baseman's only play was to throw to first.

Hodina kept the lead at three in the bottom half of the inning. The freshman walked two batters and hit another to load the bases with one out but proceeded to strike out the next batter and induce a fly out to center to get out of the jam.

Lewis & Clark finally earned some breathing room by scoring in each of the final four innings.

Gonzaga worked a leadoff walk to start the sixth, stole second and moved to third on ball four to Aikawa. He raced home on a Davis ground ball to make it 4-0.

After Pomona scored on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, Ghammachi answered with his first home run of the season, to push the lead back to 5-1 in the seventh.

The Pioneers blew the game open in the top of the eighth. Gonzaga, Davis and Bass all walked to load the bases and Heron delivered a two-run single to right field to make it 7-2. With two down, the Pioneers executed a double steal and Bass came across the plate for an 8-2 advantage.

In the ninth, senior Justin Bailey doubled and Aikawa worked a two-out walk. Davis delivered his ninth and 10thRBI of the weekend, when he ripped a two-run double to left field.

The junior was tagged out trying to take third and needed medical treatment to stop a nose bleed. It didn't stop him from coming out on the mound in the ninth and retiring all three batters he faced.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Hodina did not allow a hit until there was one out in the bottom of the fourth. The freshman allowed just one solo home run and a single in six innings. Hodina held the Sagehens to a .100 batting average for the day.
  • The Pioneers worked 12 walks in the contest with Aikawa (three), Gonzaga and Davis all posting multiple walks.
  • The victory snapped Pomona-Pitzer's five-game winning streak. The Sagehens swept fellow Northwest Conference team Linfield University in their first three games of the weekend.
  • With the win, Lewis & Clark snapped a four-game losing streak against Pomona-Pitzer dating back to 2018. The Sagehens had won the previous four matchups by a 43-13 margin.
  • Lewis & Clark has now posted five-straight winning weekends in California. Lewis & Clark has gone 15-3-1 dating back to the second weekend of the 2022 season. The Pioneers have beaten all six (Redlands, Caltech, CMS, Whittier, Occidental, Pomona-Pitzer) Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams they have faced during that span.
