Boxers Score 9 Unanswered To Down Baseball In Non-Conference Game

The Pioneers scored all four runs in first two innings of game

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College baseball scored four runs in the first two innings during Thursday night's non-conference road contest at Northwest Conference rival Pacific University, but the Boxers scored nine unanswered runs to take the first of five regular-season meetings between the two squads.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Senior Jakob Ghammachi was walked with the bases loaded in the first to put the Pioneers on the scoreboard first, and junior Brennen Davis hit a three-run homer to go up 4-0 in the top of the second inning.
 
Brett Pierson gave up seven hits, six runs, one earned, and struck out seven of the 23 batters he faced in four innings.
 
In the first inning, Lewis & Clark loaded the bases following a sequence that included a walk, a single, a flyout, and another walk. With two outs already on the board, Ghammachi came to bat and drew the inning's third walk for the Pioneers, bringing lead-off hitter senior Jack Savant across home plate to score.
 
Pierson started his second appearance of the season with three strikeouts in the bottom of the inning.
 
After two quick outs at the top of the second, the Boxers walked Savant and sophomore Brandon Gonzaga. Davis stepped to the plate and hit his fifth home run in five games to put the Pioneers up 4-0.
 
Pacific responded by scoring a bases-loaded run on a walk in the bottom of the second and two unearned runs in the third. The Boxers took the lead in the fourth with three unearned runs to go up 6-4. The Boxers added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to go up 9-4.
 
Freshman Felix Gibeault made his collegiate debut at the bottom of the eighth inning on the mound for Lewis & Clark. The right-hander threw 18 pitches and struck out all three batters in the inning, one looking and two swinging.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Davis' home run tonight has tied him with Dan Jones (1979-82) for 12th in program history with 17 career home runs.
  • Junior Justin Cavagnaro had 12 of the Pioneers 24 putouts from behind the plate tonight.
  • Freshman Toby Strawser made his collegiate debut has a pinch hitter in the top of the inning for Lewis & Clark.
