Women's Basketball Uses Huge Fourth-Quarter Run To Win Opener

GEORGETOWN, Texas—Lewis & Clark College women's basketball outscored host Southwestern University (Texas) 28-9 in the fourth quarter, to erase a 10-point deficit, and earn a 68-59 win in their 2024-25 season opener.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 68, Southwestern 59
(Lewis & Clark 1-0)
(Southwestern 0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore Madilyn Palosi scored 12 of her team-high 17 points in the final stanza and Lewis & Clark held the Pirates to just 3-17 shooting to overcome a 13-point deficit. The Pioneers used a 25-2 run in the fourth to turn an 11-point deficit into a 12-point lead.

Palosi more than tripled her career-high for scoring by pouring in 17 points in 18 minutes off the bench. She went 4-9 from the field, knocked down a team-leading two 3-pointers (2-5) and hit seven of her eight free throws. Palosi added three rebounds, two steals and an assist.

First year Kaitlen Carns had a tremendous debut. Carns finished with 16 points on 5-10 shooting and hit five of her six free throws. Carns added five rebounds and finished second on the team with 32 minutes and 45 seconds of game time.

Sophomore Lauryn Frederickson was the third and final Pioneer in double-figures. Frederickson just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds and she chipped in two steals and one block.

Eight of the 11 Pioneers who saw action on Saturday scored, as Lewis & Clark debuted a new-look roster after graduating five players (four seniors) last May.

Lewis & Clark got off to a decent start to the contest as they were tied 11-11 after the opening 7:50. Junior Tatiana Rebanal and Frederickson combined for Lewis & Clark's first eight points and Palosi hit a three to tie the game at 11-11.

Southwestern would close the quarter on an 8-3 run to take a 19-14 lead after one. The hosts would hold that lead for the next 25:57 of game action, as Lewis & Clark managed to stay in the game, but couldn't find a way to take control until late in the fourth.

The Pirates extended their advantage to 26-14 midway through the second stanza and would go into halftime with a 38-28 advantage.

Southwestern pushed their lead to a game-high 13 points in the opening minute of the second half (41-28) but Lewis & Clark would counter with a mini 6-1 run to cut the deficit back to eight. Junior Madelyn Sanchez, Frederickson and sophomore DJ Kendrick all scored baskets in a 1:36 span to make it 42-34. The hosts would push their lead back to a dozen but Lewis & Clark finished the quarter on a high note to keep the deficit at 10 (50-40 after three).

Southwestern would score four of the first seven points in the fourth quarter to make it 54-43 with 8:14 to play.

Lewis & Clark would dominate the rest of the way, as they outscored the hosts 25-5 to earn the comeback win. Frederickson started a 14-0 run with a 3-point play and Carns hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter to make it a six-point game (54-48). Carns added a running layup and Frederickson hit a layup of her own to make it a one-possession game with 5:13 left to play. Palosi tied the game at 54-54 with a put-back layup. After a Pirates turnover, Palosi hit a 3-pointer to give Lewis & Clark their first lead (57-54) since the Pioneers led 8-6 early in the first quarter.

Southwestern temporarily slowed the Pioneers momentum with an Ellie Ward layup but Carns and Palosi each hit two free throws to ignite an 11-0 run.

With the Pioneers leading 61-56 with just under two minutes to go, Palosi stepped into the passing lane to steal the ball away and hit a fast break layup to make it 63-56. Lewis & Clark hit five of their eight free throws down the stretch to extend their lead to 68-56. Southwestern finally snapped the Pioneers 25-2 run with a three-pointer with four seconds to play.
