Tornados Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Women’s Basketball

Madilyn Palosi, Madelyn Sanchez and Kaitlen Carnes combined for 34 of Pioneers 64 points.

AUSTIN, Texas – Lewis & Clark College women's basketball erased a seven-point deficit in the first half to lead by as many four points in the second quarter, but Concordia University Texas pulled away for a 79-64 win in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Sophomore Madilyn Palosi (12 points) and junior Madelyn Sanchez (11 points) combined for seven three-pointers to erase a seven-point deficit and pull the Pioneers with three point at halftime.
 
First-year Kaitlen Carns went 7-9 from the free throw line on her way to 11 points against the Tornados.
 
DJ Kendrick pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and led the Pioneers with five assists. The sophomore added eight points and a block in the game.
 
Lewis & Clark overcame cold shooting and a seven-point deficit early in the first quarter to pull within 9-7 after Kendrick knocked to a three with 2:12 left on the clock and hit a free throw 21 seconds later. Concordia's Destiny Mathews scored three of her game high 37 points with 20 second on the clock to extend the advantage back to seven points. Sophomore Divinity Singleton (six points, seven rebounds) found Palosi for a three right before the end of the quarter to cut the deficit to 16-12.
 
Sanchez hit back to back shots from beyond the arc in the first three minutes of the second quarter to make it 21-20 Concordia. Kendrick found Singleton down low to give Lewis & Clark their first lead of the game at 24-23 with 4:40 left before the half. The second frame saw a total of six lead changes in the final five minutes. Palosi gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the game, 30-26, after junior Tatiana Rebanal (four points, three rebounds) set her up for a three on a fastbreak at 2:37.  The Tornados scored the final two baskets to take a 35-32 advantage into the locker room.
 
First-year Isabell Bernard scored all six of her points in the third quarter and was instrumental in an 11-2 run that cut Concordia's lead form ten points to one, 48-47 with just under two minutes to go. The Tornados then scored eight straight for a 56-47 advantage heading into the final quarter.
 
Concordia pushed the lead to 64-47 with eight quick points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Rebenal, Sanchez, and sophomore Lauryn Frederickson (six points) put together a 7-0 Lewis & Clark run and cut the lead to 10 points. The Pioneers would get no closer though and the Tornados would hold on for the 79-64 win.  
   
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Frederickson led the team with two blocks and two steals while adding four assists and five rebounds.
  • Palosi is averaging 14.5 points through the first two games of the year after scoring 19 total points in her first year.  
  • All eight Pioneers that saw time, played at least 20 minutes and scored at least four points.
