PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's track & field freshman
Noah Nelson posted a top-10 all-time mark in the 800m and men's track & field notched four top-40 all-time marks on Saturday at the Portland Twilight Meet and Linfield Open.
HOW IT HAPPENED - PORTLAND TWILIGHT
Eight Pioneers notched PRs on Saturday in one of the Pioneers final meets of the 2023 season.
Freshman
Nick Stade posted the lone first-place finish on the day for Lewis & Clark. He defeated the three-man field in the 400m hurdles by over five seconds with a time of 56.01.
Nelson put together another one of the best races of the day. The freshman placed 13
th overall in the 800m when he crossed the line in 1:53.25. His mark put him in sixth place all-time in program history. Junior
Frankie Reid placed 54
th in the 800m with a time of 2:04.44.
Three Pioneers registered PR marks in the 5,000m run. Junior
Miles Voenell notched a huge PR time to finish in 18
th place with a time of 15:13.52 (23
rd all-time in program history). Sophomore
Peter Ford added a PR of his own, when he came across in 15:24.89 (38
th all-time). Freshman
Theron Plumb finished in 31
st place with a mark of 16:05.73. Freshman
Joseph Naylor registered a time of 16:58.57 in his first time running the race at the collegiate level (36
th place).
Junior
Nate Bay added a top-25 mark in the 3,000m steeplechase. Bay finished the race in 9:45.18 to finish in 13
th place and move up to 24
th in program history.
Sophomores
Will Dennis and
Connor Harrod both ran the 1,500m. Dennis placed 43
rd with a time of 4:03.65. Harrod ended the race in 4:40.36 to finish 61
st.
Sophomore
Paul Biaggi posted the top times in the 400m and 200m. In the 400m, Biaggi placed sixth overall with a time of 53.82.
He added a PR time in the 200m. Biaggi's time of 23.91 put him in seventh place. Freshman
Will Laskey took 14
th in the 200m with a time of 28.37.
Laskey took 12
th place in the 100m, when he finished in 12.46.
HOW IT HAPPENED - LINFIELD OPEN
Freshmen
Jonathan Fritz and
Andrew Fletcher and senior
Sean Bodi represented the Pioneers in the field events at the Linfield Open.
Fritz led Lewis & Clark in all three events he competed in.
In the discus throw, he posted a PR mark on his second throw. He heaved the discus 35.97m (118-00 feet) to post a PR of nine inches and placed 12
th overall. Fletcher finished in 26
th with a toss of 27.96m (91-08 feet).
Fritz also led the Pioneers in the javelin and the high jump. He posted a throw of 44.06m (144-06 feet) to finish in 11
th place in the javelin. In the high jump, Fritz cleared 1.68m (5-06.00 feet) to place 14
th.
Bodi led the way in the triple jump and long jump. Bodi registered a leap of 12.56m (41-02.50 feet) to finish in ninth place in the triple jump. He took 26
th in the long jump when he flew 5.88m (19-03.50 feet).
Fletcher led the way in the shot put. The freshman posted a PR throw of 11.41m (37-05.25 feet) to finish in 14
th place.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Stade has now finished first or second in the 400m hurdles all six times he's run the event this spring. The freshman has won five times and placed second once (John Knight Invitational).
- Nelson's time of 1:53.25 is the fastest time by a Pioneer men's runner in the 800m since 1978.
- Voenell posted a PR by over 25 seconds in the 5,000m. He beat his previous best time by 25.14 seconds.
- Bay beat his PR in the 3,000m steeplechase by over 11 seconds (11.32 seconds).
WHAT'S NEXT
The Pioneers will have a small contingent of student-athletes return to action next Saturday, when Lewis & Clark hosts the Portland Distance Carnival.
