CORVALLIS, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College sent three track and field athletes to compete at the Oregon State University High-Performance Meet on Friday evening, where
Max Aldrich set a new program record in the 5000m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Aldrich's new record of 14:15.18 bested the previous record by just over two seconds that was set last year by George Karamitos (14:17.31). The sophomore finished 5
th among 30 runners and 2
nd among attached collegiate runners. Aldrich finished just under three seconds behind Washington State University's Brian Barsaiya. He beat out runners from multiple DI programs, including Washington State, the University of Portland, Portland State University, and Eastern Washington University. Aldrich was in 19
th place after the first 200m, then moved up to 10
th place at 600m. At the 2200m and 2600m splits, he was in 9
th before moving back to 10
th at 3000m. Aldrich raced up to lead the race at the 3400m split.
Freshman
Noah Nelson competed in the first race for the Pioneers, finishing 14
th out of 39 runners in the 1500m Open race with a new personal record of 4:02.22. Nelson's previous PR was 4:13.51 at the Pacific University Open on April 1. He was fourth among Division III runners.
One night after being recognized as the silver medal winner of the Lewis & Clark Judy McMullen Scholar-Athlete of the Year, junior
Katya Schwieterman ran the 3K steeplechase in 11:53.97. She ran in the open race at the meet, finished 8
th of 13 runners, and was the only DIII runner in the field.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Nelson's time in the 1500m is the third-best time by a Pioneer runner this season and is 37th in program history.
- Schwieterman is the only woman this year to run the 3K steeplechase in under 14 minutes this year.
- Aldrich set the indoor track program record for the 5K earlier this year.
