Bruins Spoil NWC Home Opener for Women’s Tennis

Arielle Bloom earned her first win of season at No. 2 singles to lead Pios.

PORTLAND, Ore.
 – Lewis & Clark College opened Northwest Conference play with Seraphina Vossen, Arielle Bloom, and Kacie Lau earning singles wins, but visiting George Fox University earned the 6-3 dual win on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Vossen won the first point for the Pioneers in the dual. The junior defeated Emily McDonald at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
 
Fellow junior Bloom earned the second point of the day for the Pios at No. 2 singles. After winning the first set 6-3, she dropped the second set 6-1. Bloom rebounded in set number three and won 6-4 to earn her first singles win of the season, defeating Oliva Morris.
 
The Pioneers went down 3-0 after doubles play and 4-1 after completing two singles matches.
 
Junior Caren Uribe and sophomore Lau fell 8-1 at No. 1 doubles to Kalli Wiker and Cassey Hitch. Freshman Susanna Anand and Bloom dropped the No. 3 spot 8-4 to Breann VanderYacht and Arianna Rader. Vossen and sophomore Hayley Kreps played a close match at No. 2 doubles but fell 8-5 to Morris and Ellie Mangan.  
 
Uribe dropped her match at No. 1 singles soon after Vossen had notched the first point for the Pioneers. Uribe dropped the first set 6-1, but played a more competitive set, losing the second 7-5 to Wiker.
 
Kreps took the first set 6-4 from Hitch at the No. 4 spot. Hitch won the second set 6-1 to force the third set. The two played a solid third set, but Hitch squeaked out the win in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-4).
 
Sophomore Allison Gabelman lost 6-4, 6-1 to Rader at the No. 6 spot.
 
Lau played Elizabeth Cook at No. 5 singles in three tight sets. Lau won the first set 6-4, and then Cook took the second in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-3). Lau took the deciding third set in a 10-point tiebreak, winning 10-8.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Gabelman and freshman Yenenesh Cohen won a doubles exhibition match 8-2 against Abby Bond and Elizabeth Cook.
  • Lau is now 3-0 in singles play this spring and 2-0 at the No. 5 spot.
  • Vossen is 3-3 in singles play to start the spring season; she is 2-1 at No. 3 singles.
  • Bloom is now 1-1 at the No. 2 singles spot this season.

The Pioneers play their first conference road game on Sunday at 11 a.m. when they travel to Willamette.
