Women's Tennis Ends Nine-Match Skid Against George Fox With 4-3 Victory

Madi Vianzon clinches match at No. 6 singles in Northwest Conference opener.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis opened the 2026 season and Northwest Conference play with a 4-3 victory over George Fox University on Saturday in the L&C Tennis Dome, snapping a nine-match losing streak to the Bruins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The River Otters swept doubles play and split singles 3-3 to secure the match victory. Senior Susanna Anand, junior Emma Loucks and sophomore Madi Vianzon each finished 2-0 on the day against the Bruins.
 
Lewis & Clark secured the doubles point with three straight wins. Anand and junior Charlotte Makoni defeated Riley Bobkiewicz and Shanah Denham 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. First-year Alex Mignogna and Vianzon earned a 6-2 victory over Nicole Schnurbusch and Audrey Gardner at No. 3 doubles. Juniors Maya Curry and Loucks completed the sweep with a 6-3 win against Sophie Denham and Juhree Kizziar at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point.
 
Anand provided the first singles point for Lewis & Clark at No. 1, defeating Bobkiewicz 6-2, 6-2. George Fox responded with three consecutive singles victories to take a 3-2 lead. Sophie Denham defeated Curry 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Juhree Kizziar won a first-set tiebreaker and closed out Mignogna 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Shanah Denham rallied past Makoni 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
 
Loucks tied the team score at 3-3 with a straight-set win at No. 5 singles, defeating Schnurbusch 6-2, 6-4. The deciding match came at No. 6 singles, where Vianzon dropped the opening set 6-2 before winning the second set 6-0 and pulling away in the third set for a 6-1 victory to clinch the match.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Vianzon won 12 of the final 13 games after dropping the first set.
  • Anand won 12 of the final 15 games after falling behind 1-0 in the opening set at No. 1 singles.
  • Lewis & Clark earned its first win over George Fox since a 5-4 victory on March 7, 2020.
