HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers only dropped four total games in doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Sophomore
Caren Uribe and junior
Seraphina Vossen defeated Kinsey Lockhart and Riley Cordova 8-2 at number one doubles. Sophomore
Hayley Kreps and junior
Arielle Bloom won 8-2 at the second doubles spot over Princess Ventura and Vania Moreno-Colin. At number three doubles, freshman
Yenenesh Cohen and sophomore
Kacie Lau blanked Denali Terry and Jocelyn Nguyen 8-0.
Uribe had the most dominating win at number one singles, losing only one game to Cordova, taking the match 6-1, 6-0 to give the Pios a 4-0 lead.
Vossen secured the team win for the Pioneers at number three singles. She defeated Ventura 6-1, 6-4.
Bloom was the next player to notch a victory at number two singles. She took a 6-3 lead over Lockhart after one set. The second set went to Lockhart 6-2 to force the third set super tiebreak. Bloom was able to grab the win 10-7 in the third to win the set.
Three sophomores won the final singles points for the Pioneers.
Allison Gabelman defeated Moreno-Colin 6-3, 6-2 at number five singles.
Soraya Young-Pen playing in her first match of the spring, gave up only four games, 6-2, 6-2, at the sixth spot. In the number five singles match,
Lauren Smith-Euben overwhelmed Terry 6-2, 6-3 in the night's final match to finish.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Pioneers defeated the Thunderbirds 6-3 in an exhibition match last year.
- Lau is 3-0 against Highline over the past two years. Last year she was a winner at number three singles and won at number two doubles with Kreps, making Kreps 2-0 against the Thunderbirds.
- With today's singles win Gabelman is also 2-0 against Highline as she won at number three doubles with Sujhad Amado Aguad.
- This was the second of two exhibition matches for the Pioneers this spring.
