Women’s Tennis Splits Weekend Matches

Allison Gableman and Susana Anand earned wins for the Pioneers.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Los Angeles, Calif. – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis team earned a split in their final two matches in Southern California against California Lutheran University and Whittier College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman Susanna Anand earned three wins in the weekend split, and sophomore Allison Gabelman earned two, as the Pioneers concluded their first weekend of the spring season in Southern California, capping it off with their first dual win of the season.

Lewis & Clark took a 3-0 lead to start the match against Whittier, winning all three doubles points Sunday afternoon. Junior Arielle Bloom and sophomore Hayley Kreps were the first Pioneers to win, as the number three doubles pair defeated Manasvi Vardham and Emily List 8-4. The number one doubles team of Anand and junior Seraphina Vossen won 8-7 (7-4) over Jasmine Saunders and Malvika Suryavanshi. Junior Caren Uribe and sophomore Sujhad Amado Aguad took the number two doubles point with an 8-6 win over Maci Davis and Keeley Arendt.
 
The Poets took four points in the match during singles. Uribe fell at number two singles 6-1, 6-4 to Arendt. Whittier's Vardam beat Bloom in the three spot 7-5, 6-0. Vossen was defeated at number four singles 6-3, 6-4, by Poets Davis. The fourth Whittier point came from Suryavanshi when Kreps fell at number five 6-1, 7-6 (1).
 
Gableman defeated the Poets' List in two sets by a score of 7-5, 6-3, to set up the match-deciding point at number one singles.  
 
Anand took the first set of the match 6-4. Whittier's Saunders responded with a second-set win of 7-5. With the team score knotted at four all, the deciding singles match went to a third. Anand earned her third total win of the weekend with a 7-5 score in the final set.

On Saturday, Lewis & Clark visited California Lutheran for the second of three road matches.
 
The Regals earned all three doubles points as Anand and Vossen were defeated in the number one spot 8-2, Bloom and Uribe lost at number two, 8-1, and Kreps and Amado Aguad fell in the number three doubles match 8-2.
 
The lone point for the Pioneers was at number two singles. Anand defeated Mina Ahmadi 6-2, 7-6(6).
 
Vossen and Kreps each took their Cal Lutheran singles opponent to three sets for the second consecutive dual match. Vossen lost the first set at the fourth spot 6-4, then won the second 6-1. In the third-set super tiebreaker, Cal Lutheran's Kayla Kling won 11-9 to take the match 6-4, 1-6, 11-9. Kreps won her first set 6-4, then lost the next two 6-1, 10-8. The remaining singles matches went to the Regals in straight sets to give them an 8-1 win over the Pioneers.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • The Pioneers are 2-1 in tiebreaks this season.
  • Anand is 3-2 overall after this weekend, with a 2-1 mark in singles play.
  • The women's team has won three in a row against Whittier. The two teams have not played since 2015.
  • Lewis & Clark has split their four dual matches with Cal Lutheran. The final score for all four has been 8-1 in favor of the victor.
