Women's Tennis Falls 7-2 to Occidental

Junior Seraphina Vossen earned a three-set singles victory

Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Junior Seraphina Vossen and sophomore Hayley Kreps each won third-set super tiebreakers to lead Lewis & Clark in a 7-2 setback against host Occidental College on Friday afternoon.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED

Friday's match was far closer than the final score, with four of the six singles matches going to three sets. The host Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles but the Pioneers put up a huge fight at the bottom of the singles lineup.Ā

Vossen earned her first win in a dual match as a Pioneer at number four singles. The junior transfer defeated Julia Chun 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 in a third-set super tiebreaker.Ā

Kreps matched Vossen with a three-set, super tiebreaker win of her own.Ā She dispatched Emma Silber 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 at fifth singles.Ā

Occidental got off to a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of 8-5 victories. At number one singles, Andei Fukushige and Sarah Fleming defeated the Pios top pair of junior Arielle Bloom and sophomore Caren Uribe 8-0. 2. Alexis Matabuena and Mathilde Depery earned the Tigers an 8-5 win at number two doubles over freshman Susanna Anand and Vossen. Occidental added an 8-5 at third doubles, with Lillian Lin and Silber defeating Sujhad Amado Aguad and Kreps 8-5.Ā

The Tigers clinched the match win with wins at first and second singles.Ā

Fukushige downed Uribe 6-0, 6-0 at number one singles. Fleming added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anand at second singles.

At third singles, Matabuena barely held on to edge Bloom 7-5, 3-6, 10-5.Ā

The sixth singles match was just as close. Sophomore Allison Gabelman took the first set 6-3 over Nicole Anderson, but Anderson won the second set 6-1 to force a super tiebreaker. Anderson finally edged Gabelman 3-6, 6-1, 11-9.Ā
