Whittier Uses Three-Set Wins To Down Men's Tennis

Landon Cronin combined with Kristian Peev for a win at number one singles

Box Score WHITTIER, Calif.—Senior captain Kristian Peev went 2-0 but it wasn't enough, as Lewis & Clark College men's tennis fell 6-3 to host Whittier College in the Pioneers first match of their Southern California trip.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Friday's match went down to the third set in singles play, with Whittier earning wins in three of the four matches that went to a third-set to take the 6-3 decision. 
 
Peev teamed up with freshman Landon Cronin for a win at number one doubles and earned a singles win at first-flight singles. Fellow senior Alberto Dos Santos added a win at fourth singles for the Pioneers. 
 
Whittier took an early 2-0 advantage. At third doubles, Prayag Ahire and Luu Van Den Hoek defeated sophomore Matt Chio and Dos Santos 8-3. 
 
The Poets made it 2-0 when Kieran Carroll and Luca De Bona knocked off freshmen Kai Wills and Wade McDermott 8-5 at second doubles. 
 
Lewis & Clark cut into the deficit at number one doubles. Peev and Cronin downed Spencer Cinco and Ahmed Amer 8-6. 
 
Peev earned the Pioneers first singles win of the day. The senior dropped the first set 6-4 to Cinco, before roaring back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. 
 
Dos Santos added a win at fourth singles. The senior handled Amer 6-0, 6-4. 
 
Carroll earned a back-and-forth win over Cronin at second singles. Cronin won the first set 6-4, but Carroll responded with set wins of 6-1, 6-4 to take the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. 
 
Ahire gave the hosts the lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Chio at third singles. 
 
Each of the final two matches went three sets. 

At fifth singles, Wills took the first set 6-2, but De Bona responded to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-0. 
 
Van Den Hoek earned a comeback win over McDermott at sixth singles. The Pios freshman won the first set 6-4, but Van Den Hoek won the match 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Lewis & Clark took the first set in five of the six singles matches. 
  • Peev has now won back-to-back three-set singles matches and is 4-0 over the past two matches. 
  • Dos Santos picked up his first singles match of the spring. 
  • Friday's match was the first meeting between the two men's programs since March 24, 2009, when the Pios earned a 9-0 win. 
  • The Pios matchup against Whittier was their first dual match against a Division III program this season.

Men's Tennis will have a quick turnaround, when they travel to take on California Lutheran University on Saturday at 10 a.m. in their second of three matches this weekend.
