Women's Soccer Stuns Linfield With Two Late Goals

The Pioneers erased deficits of 1-0 and 3-1 to earn a tie in NWC action

McMinnville, Ore.—Junior Celeste Schreifels scored two goals in the final 6:10 of regulation, to help Lewis & Clark College women's soccer earn a thrilling 3-3 comeback tie against host Linfield College on Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 3, Linfield 3
(Lewis & Clark 2-3-2, Northwest Conference 2-1-1)
(Linfield 2-4-2, Northwest Conference 0-3-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Schreifels second goal, scored with just 15 seconds left on the clock, capped off a thrilling finish for the Pioneers. Lewis & Clark erased deficits of 1-0 and 3-1 to earn a valuable point and stay unbeaten on the road in Northwest Conference action (2-0-1).

Freshman Cheyanne Johnston-Heinz scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game late in the first half.

Junior Jeni Baez picked up her first collegiate assist on Schreifels' first goal.

In net, Sophia Young made one saves to move to 2-2-1 on the season.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 30th minute, when Laney Green scored her first of two goals with a strike off a corner kick.

Johnston-Heinz responded just over eight minutes later. Sofia Congram lofted a pass into the box and Kate Meinhard was able to keep the ball from going over the end line by slipping it across the 6-yard box. Two Pioneers got their foot to the ball and after an initial stop by the Wildcats keeper, Johnston-Heinz pounced on the loose ball at the far post and snuck her shot past the goalie for a 1-1 tie.

Linfield grabbed the lead right back to start the second half. Ruby Lacktrup scored at 48:40 to make it 2-1 and Green scored on a penalty to extend the lead to 3-1 at 64:40.

Lewis & Clark came roaring back and cut the deficit in half at 83:50. Baez crossed the ball into the box and found Schreifels, who calmly dribbled twice to open a shooting lane and then blasted a high shot over the keeper.

With the clock winding down, Lewis & Clark found the equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Sophomore Abby Hayes made a crucial play at midfield, when she beat a Wildcat to the ball and managed to boot the ball to a teammate instead of letting it go out for a throw-in. The Pioneers pushed the ball to their right back who fired a pass towards the top of the 18. Brecklyn Beighle's touch found Meinhard and it deflected off the Pioneer freshman into the 18-yard box. Schreifels reacted first and beat the keeper to the ball, before chipping it in for a stunning 3-3 tie.
