Lewis & Clark claims weekend sweep

SALEM, Ore. -- Kate Stratton was perfect, and Arielle Bloom and Madelyn Landerfelt won 8-0 in doubles, as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers beat the Willamette Bearcats, 8-1, on Sunday at Salem Tennis and Swim Club.

Stratton won 6-0, 6-0 over Paisley Lieske in No. 4 singles, while Landerfelt and Bloom won all their games against Alyssa Oberg and Lieske in second-position doubles.

Rachael Rice took the top singles match-up, 6-3, 6-1, against Sarah Dean.

Key Moments

In the top doubles match, Maca Vives and Natalie Kowal won 8-1 over Siena Ginsburg and Dean, as the Pioneers gave up just two games across the three matches.

"Playing away, getting a better result - and while incorporating more players is a win-win-win situation," Pios head coach Jimmy Chau said. "Maca and Natalie really set the tone for the match coming out firing. The duo played lights out dubs and could be a team to be reckoned with in the future."

Rice and Stratton won 8-1 in No. 3 doubles against Ruby Blake and McKenna Turner. While the No. 1 and 3 pairings were brand new for the Pioneers, Landerfelt and Bloom's win in second position improved their season record to 3-0.

Landerfelt won her first singles match of the year with a 7-5, 6-3 effort at No. 2 against Ginsburg. Kowal remained undefeated in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Oberg in third position.

Meanwhile, Stratton's win at No. 4 ticked her record to 5-0, matching Vives for the best mark on the team so far this year.

"Kate was on a mission today and it showed in her dominant play," Chau said. "Rachael played a really smart match and used her all-court game to win at No. 1.

"We have some really positive things to take from this weekend, but also know that we need to be even better to reach our goals."
