Lewis & Clark downed in non-NWC match

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Playing the Pacific Boxers for the second straight day, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers used an alternative format for Sunday's non-counting match against their Northwest Conference mates. The Pios were downed 6-3.

With each match consisting of eight-game prosets, Maca Vives and Kate Stratton were singles winners. Madelyn Landerfelt and Stratton paired for a No. 2 doubles win.

Kara Rule made her collegiate debut in No. 6 singles.

Key Moments

Stratton and Vives improved to 3-0 on the season after a pair of singles wins on Sunday. Vives won the No. 3 pairing, 8-1, over Jessica Eligio, while Stratton took the fourth spot, 8-3, over Kailei Eustis.

For the Pioneers, the non-conference match-ups will allow for some creativity.

"Without a preseason, we're using these non-conference matches to experiment and try different pairings," Lewis & Clark head coach Jimmy Chau said. "It's also a great opportunity to get playing time for some of our players who aren't in the normal rotation.

"We had some ups and downs today, but that's all part of the learning process and becoming a complete team and individual players."

Bloom lost for the first time in her debut season with an 8-4 setback against Cara Tamaye in the fifth singles spot.

Landerfelt and Stratton won 8-3 over Kendall Taomoto and Eligio.
