Late game rally lifts Pioneers to win over Bruins

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers closed out their road series against the George Fox Bruins with a come-from-behind 9-6 win. A couple of Pioneers' errors helped the Bruins to an early 5-0 lead in the second, but Lewis & Clark rallied back in the seventh to pull ahead and clinched the win when they were able to hold off the Bruins in the eighth.

"Overall, it's great to get a series win against a really quality team." Said head coach Matt Kosderka, "They have handled us pretty easily the past two years, so I was elated to see our guys not panic when they got behind. It says a lot about each of our players and their willingness to fight for each other."

Zack Kon led the offensive efforts with three hits, two runs and one RBI. Kon was also one of three Pios to hit a double. Jack Thomson, Justin Katona and Sam Helms all earned a stolen base while combining for three runs.

Andrew Yarak earned the win on the mound with five strikeouts. He allowed seven runs and six hits against 32 batters.

Key Moments

The Pios found some momentum in the sixth when Kon started the inning with a double to left center. He stayed put when Tyler Gannon struck out swinging but made it home on a double from Katona that went through the right side. Sammy Benbow struck out swinging on his turn at the plate but made it to first on an error by Bruins' catcher Cutter Kitson, which then advanced him to third and scored Katona. Sam Helms was walked on his turn at-bat and was followed by Justin Bailey, who flied out to left field, scoring Benbow. Helms was able to steal second and put himself in scoring position, but Michael Contreras struck out swinging to end the inning.

Limiting the Bruins to a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth, the Pios then carried their momentum from the three-run rally into the seventh, where they scored another four.

Jacob Serafini started the inning with a double through the right side, the Pios' third of the game. Kon brought Serafini home on a single to right field and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Gannon's single to left field brought Kon to third and he put himself in scoring position after stealing second on a passed ball. A single from Benbow brought Kon around before Dylan Moore entered the game to pinch run for Benbow. Helms was hit with a pitch on his turn, which loaded the bases for the Pios and prompted the Bruins to bring in Austin Hallman for Sean Wiese on the mound.

Bailey and Contreras were both walked to bring in another two runs before Serafini grounded into third for the Pios' final out.
