Pioneers take down Bruins for first conference win of the season

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers faced off against their first conference rival Saturday afternoon at the Lewis & Clark Tennis Dome, defeating the George Fox Bruins 5-4. The Pios took home two wins in the doubles matches and three in the singles to clinch the day.

Madelyn Landerfelt and Caitlin Jones earned the first win of the day in their doubles match-up against Jillian Studer and Taylor Morris in the second position. They were followed by Rachael Rice and Natalie Kowal, who won their doubles match against the George Fox duo of Sophia Lawerence and Laney Search in the No. 1 spot.

Landerfelt and Rice both went on to win their singles matches and were joined by Caroline Hennes, who defeated Alyssa Byde. All three players won in two straight sets.

Key Moments

Rice competed in the first position in both doubles and singles, earning wins in both. She partnered with Kowal to defeat Lawerence and Search in an 8-6, come-from-behind victory. Their win concluded doubles play for the day.

Rice saw Lawerence again in singles, winning 6-1, 6-4 in two sets. Kowal competed in the No. 3 spot in singles and won her first set, but was ultimately defeated by Danielle Brown 6-4, 0-6, 4-6.

Landerfelt competed in the No. 2 position for both singles and doubles, and was the second Pio to pull off wins in both. Landerfelt and Jones quickly dispatched Studer and Morris, finishing first of the doubles games with an 8-1 win. 

Jones competed in the fifth position for singles against Morris, losing 4-6, 6-2, 0-6 in three sets, while Landerfelt faced off again against Studer. She defeated her 7-5, 6-4 in two sets.

Hennes took down Byde in two, redeeming herself with a 6-0, 6-4 win after losing to Byde in doubles.
