LA MIRADA, Calif. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers opened their season with a 4-0 defeat to the Biola Eagles on Friday at the Biola Tennis Center.
While the Pios didn't pick up a set, Madelyn Landerfelt and Caitlin Jones took the opening set of their singles matches to the brink. Landerfelt lost in a 7-5 tiebreaker to Inez Diaz in No. 2 position, while Jones was downed 7-5 in her No. 4 match against Anna Hartman.
Landerfelt and Jones were within 5-3 in the top doubles match when it was halted as the points were decided.

Key Moments
Two doubles and two singles matches were the only finished in the NCAA Division II scoring format. Rachael Rice and Natalie Kowal were defeated in the No. 2 doubles spot by Lauren Lee and Diaz. In the third doubles match, Maca Vives and Caroline Hennes lost to Faith Grisham and Lily Waterhouse. Both were 6-2 finals.
Kowal posted games in both of her sets against Lee in No. 3 position. She ultimately fell 6-2, 6-4. Vives dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Waterhouse in the fifth spot, while Hennes was defeated by Grisham 6-2, 5-1 in the last singles pairing.
"I was super proud of the team today," assistant coach Rocky Campbell said. "We showed up ready to compete against a team who's used to playing outdoor tennis. While we didn't end up winning the match, our team fought and played to the very end. It's a great start to the rest of the weekend."
