First-half lead evaporates for Pios

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The visiting Puget Sound Loggers shot nearly 70 percent in second half, as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers were unable to hold on to a first-half lead in Friday's 97-85 loss at Pamplin Sports Center.

Lewis & Clark built an 11-point lead in the first 20 minutes. Zeke Crawford and Ryan Cibull each had eight points in the first half. Gabriel Chaikin had 23 second-half points to spark the Loggers comeback, which included a 6 of 8 performance from beyond the arc. Overall, Puget Sound shot the best percentage (58.3) in a game against the Pioneers this season.

The loss eliminates Lewis & Clark (7-15, 3-10 NWC) from Northwest Conference postseason contention.

Key Moments

Neither team missed a shot in the first 2:30 of the game including a 4 for 4 start by the Pioneers. Mak Hutson and Cibull had 3-point field goals next to scores by Kody Kennedy and Crawford as Lewis & Clark lunged out to a 10-4 lead.

Before the halfway point of the opening half, the Pios built an 11-point lead, 25-14, following the second of two first-half threes from Andrew Panicacci. Both teams exchanged runs toward halftime with Lewis & Clark holding a six-point edge at the break.

Puget Sound (11-11, 7-6 NWC) outscored 15-4 in the first four minutes of the second half and eventually grew its lead to 17.

The Pioneers shot 17 percent from 3-point range in the second half - Cibull and Panicacci made one each - but still made 41 percent from the floor. Lewis & Clark also held an edge in second-chance points, 18-7, and had fewer turnovers than the Loggers. In the end, Puget Sound made more shots.

  • Entering the weekend with the second-most double-doubles in the conference, Crawford posted his sixth on Friday night with 18 points and 10 rebounds on 9 of 13 shooting
