Pios split Tuesday twin bill in Tacoma

Box Score 1

TACOMA, Wash. -- A pair of RBI doubles by Sean Shepherd and Joey Oda sparked the Lewis & Clark Pioneers to a 10-7 win over the Puget Sound Loggers in a non-Northwest Conference matchup to conclude a Tuesday doubleheader in Washington state.

After RBI by Cameron Paton and Matt Donovan gave the Pios a 3-2 lead, Lewis & Clark fell behind entering the fourth inning. Paton and Donovan drew walks on each side of Jacob Serafini reaching on an error to load the bases with no outs before Shepherd's double through the left side scored two. The following inning, Oda entered as a pinch hitter and doubled down the left-field line to score David Schmidt and Paton and moved the Pioneers up 7-5.

Shepherd later added a home run, his team-high sixth of the season, before Sammy Benbow and Tyler Gannon hit RBI singles in the seventh.

"Loved seeing our guys bounce back after a tough first game," said head coach Matt Kosderka. "We had our opportunities against Pacific Lutheran, but gave them too many extra outs."

The Pios used seven pitchers in the game and Jeramy Albert was credited with the win after throwing two innings and allowing four hits and two runs. Austin Conniff had a team-high two strikeouts and joined Connor Eggleston and Chandler Vieira in not giving up a run.

"We struggled defensively against Puget Sound, but came up with a number of clutch hits and our pitching was solid all day long," said Kosderka.

Tyler Huling took the loss for Puget Sound. Nick Ultsch led the Loggers with a 3 for 5 performance at the plate.

Shepherd finished 2 for 5 with three RBI while Donovan had two RBI to move his team-best total to 17 this season.

Pacific Lutheran

Lewis & Clark utilized their already planned trip to Tacoma to make up a game with Pacific Lutheran that was rained out on Feb. 25 in Portland.

The Pioneers gave up three runs in the top of the third to trail early in a 6-3 defeat to the Lutes at PLU Field.

Chandler Vieira hit a sacrifice fly, Max Gordon homered and Matt Donovan hit a RBI single to score the Pios' runs. Gordon's home run is his fourth this season, the second-most for Lewis & Clark this season.

Robert Reaser struck out two in a pair of innings, allowing two earned runs and a couple of hits. Nick Kennison and Zach Merzlak threw three innings apiece.

Jacob Mortensen earned the win for the Lutes, who were led by Connor Cantu's 2 for 4 performance.

Lewis & Clark is home for three games against Whitworth beginning Friday at noon.
