Pios lose opening game of NWC debut

NEWBERG, Ore. -- In game one of Saturday's doubleheader against the George Fox Bruins, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers lost 27-9. This was the most allowed runs by the Pioneers since 2015 against Pacific Lutheran when they allowed 22 runs.This loss drops their record to 1-8 overall.

The Pioneers had a very rough start allowing the Bruins to bring in nine first-inning runs to their zero. Lewis & Clark's Donovan Matthew was able to stop the bleeding by catching the fly out in centerfield. At the top of the second inning, the Pios brought in three runs, their first run when Ryan Ericksen was walked with the bases loaded. Justin Katona then scored from the Bruins pitcher committing a balk. The third run came from Cameron Paton after D. Matthew flied out to centerfield.

At the bottom of the third, the Bruins brought in another six runs to go up 15-3. The Pios were then able to stop the bleeding from this inning after a groundout to the second baseman Chandler Vieira. The Pios then answered back bringing in four runs at the top of the fourth. Vieira hit an RBI single to left center to bring in C. Paton then Sean Shepherd homered a three-run RBI into left field to bring in Vieira and Donovan making the score 15-7. The Pios then shut out the Bruins at the bottom of the fourth.

The Pios closed the point gap even more after bringing in two runs at the top of the fifth making the score 15-9. R. Ericksen hit an RBI single to left center to bring in J. Katona and M. Donovan also hit an RBI single to bring in R. Ericksen. George Fox then cancelled out the Pios two runs bringing in two runs of their own at the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bruins brought in another two runs to go up 19-9 and shortstop Jacob Serafini was able to end the inning making the groundout to first.

The Pioneers then allowed another eight runs at the bottom of the eighth to go down 27-9.

Lewis & Clark went through three pitchers in this first game and Brian Tatman showed to be the most efficient. Tatman played in four innings and allowed four hits and four runs with five strikeouts.

The Pios allowed 20 hits, had six errors and had 11 hits of their own.
