Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. -- Freshman running back Michael Abraham rushed for a season-high 119 yards as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers lost to the Pacific Boxers, 17-7, during Saturday's Homecoming and Family Weekend football game at Griswold Stadium. Pacific scored 10 unanswered points during the rain-soaked afternoon.
The Boxers' broke a 7-7 first quarter tie with a field goal in the second quarter and the game's only score in the fourth quarter to win on the road for the first time in three games this season. The loss, the third in a row for the Pios, drops Lewis & Clark to 2-4 and a 1-3 mark in the Northwest Conference.
The weather played havoc for both teams resulting in seven fumbles, three for the home team.
After the visitors scored the game's first points on a 64-yard touchdown on a JT Greenough pass to receiver Kobe Williams in the first quarter, Lewis & Clark responded with a 9-play drive with quarterback Sawyer May tossing a 10-yard strike to tight end Dallas Garreaud.
May, who is fourth in the conference in passing touchdowns, tossed his ninth of the season, while Garreaud caught his third. The drive highlighted five rushes and four passes, which included wide receiver Heisman Hosoda snarling a 33-yard pass from May to the Pacific 10-yard line.
Two plays later, May found Garreaud in the end zone.
The Pios' defense came up big on the next Pacific drive as Greenough's pass was intercepted by defensive back Tyler Kalinske at the 27-yard line. Six plays into the ensuing drive, Hosoda fumbled and the Boxers recovered.
The Boxers, who outgained the home team 401-227, controlled 36:35 of the game's time possession. Lewis & Clark had only four offensive possessions in the second half as Pacific controlled almost 22 minutes.
Pacific improves to 3-2 on the season and have now won three straight games after starting the season 0-2. The win also makes the Boxers 3-1 in the NWC and one of three NWC teams with a winning mark in conference play (George Fox & Linfield). Brandon Boyd, who leads the conference 109.5 rushing yards, led with 186 yards on 29 carries.
Cale Crawford led the Pioneers with 12 tackles, seven of which were solo. Dante Smith, Tawayne Malone, James Tostado and Andrew Werst all had seven or more. Tostado forced two fumbles, while Werst had a tackle for loss.
Field possession was at a premium during the rainy afternoon. Lewis & Clark's average starting point was its own 21, while Pacific started, on average, at its own 32-yard-line. The Pioneers' best drive of the second half was their first possession of the third quarter. Starting at their own 3-yard-line after a 32-yard punt by Pacific's Ryan Carhart, Lewis & Clark put together a 10-play effort, but only got to their own 40. Thor Retzlaff executed his second successful fake punt of the year, going for a 10-yard gain on fourth-and-two from the Pioneers' 11.
Lewis & Clark continues conference play on Oct. 28, traveling to George Fox for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. There will be an audio-only broadcast presented produced for Lewis & Clark via PioStream.
