Lewis & Clark loses in season opener at Claremont M-S

Box Score

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- A 19-yard field goal by Jordan Hendrickson answered the Claremont M-S opening touchdown drive, but the Lewis & Clark Pioneers couldn't find any more points in a 35-3 loss to the Stags at Zinda Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hendrickson, who is a first-year placekicker for the Pioneers, rounded out a 10-play, 65-yard drive with the kick for his first career points.

CMS running back Andrew Segre scored on a 2-yard run before Hendrickson's field goal. Lewis & Clark trailed at halftime, 21-3, after Claremont M-S scored touchdowns on a 7-yard touchdown pass to Chris Cziesla from Trey Reynolds, who later threw a 15-yard touchdown to Andrew Scott in the second quarter.

Lewis & Clark's Thor Retzlaff had the team's longest gain of the game, a 29-yard run on a fake punt that brought the Pios into CMS territory toward the end of the second quarter. A penalty on a Dallas Garreaud first-down reception ended the drive's momentum and Lewis & Clark punted before CMS kneeled on the ball to end the half.

One of the best Pioneers drives of the second half was a 7-play, 44-yard effort in the third quarter. Niko Fortino, who started at quarterback and finished with 157 yards passing, went 3 for 3 including a 19-yard completion to Carl Appleton. He followed that with a 12-yard run to get into CMS territory, but the Pioneers had to punt after Eric Hawkins was stopped short of a first down on a 3rd-and-1 play.

Next week is Lewis & Clark's home opener. Fan Fest 2016 begins in the morning at Griswold Stadium before kickoff against Pomona-Pitzer at noon.
