PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Garrison sisters, Summer and Aurora, dropped one set in the top doubles match, and only one game between them in singles, as the nationally-ranked Lewis & Clark Pioneers defeated George Fox 9-0 on Saturday at the L&C Tennis Dome.
The 20th-ranked Pios swept doubles, including an 8-0 win by the No. 2 pair of Wiktoria Plawska and Kacey Incerpi (5-1) over Ellen Pearson and Taylor Barnes. In the third position, Claudia Lew and Christine Eliazo (4-3), the No. 14 doubles pair according to the initial Oracle/ITA Division III National Rankings, beat Andrea Motley and Isla Teppo 8-1.
The Garrisons were 8-1 winners over Sarah Tuemmier and Kristen Mock in the top match-up, as the 23rd-ranked national doubles pair improved to 6-0 this spring.
"We were really happy with the way we came out in doubles today," said Lewis & Clark head coach Patrick Dreves. "It really set the tone for the rest of the day."
Summer Garrison (6-0), ranked seventh in the nation, stayed undefeated with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Tuemmier in the top singles match. Aurora Garrison (4-3) has won her last four singles matches after a straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 win against Barnes.
Incerpi (pictured below right) and Lew shined in their singles matches too. Playing in the fifth position, Incerpi beat Teppo 6-0, 6-1 to improve to 3-3 this season. Lew competed at the No. 6 and moved to 6-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Mock.
Eliazo boosted her team-best record to 7-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Motley in the No. 4 position. Plawska (5-0) remained without a loss as well, beating Pearson 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot.
Lewis & Clark leads Whitman in the Northwest Conference overall standings by one game. Linfield is in third place, followed by George Fox and Pacific Lutheran.
The Pios, which ended Whitman's 39-game NWC regular season winning streak with a 7-2 victory on Feb. 19, play the Missionaries again on Apr. 2 in Walla Walla, Wash. After a road dual with Pacific on Sunday, the Pios play four matches against nationally-ranked teams, including top-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, over spring break, Mar. 21-26, in California.
