Pios fail to overcome Puget Sound's second half shooting spree

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- On the same night that Lewis & Clark junior Markel Leonard etched his Pioneers' career-high 22 points, Puget Sound freshman Jimmy Wohrer made all seven of his shots, as Lewis & Clark lost its fifth straight game, 76-69, at Pamplin Sports Center on Friday night.

Of Wohrer's seven made shots, five came from 3-point range, as he matched Leonard with 22 points. Overall, the Loggers put four players in double figures to help erase Lewis & Clark's 34-29 halftime lead.

"We had a couple of defensive slip-ups," said Leonard, who shot 8 of 15 in the game. "We missed some shots and the biggest thing was our defense at the end. They hit some shots."

Alex Jones put in 10 points as the only other Pioneers player in double-digits, but after outshooting the Loggers 42 to 31 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, Lewis & Clark made just 1 of 12 attempts in the final 20 minutes. Meanwhile, led by three from Wohrer, Puget Sound went 4 of 9, or 44 percent, in the second.

The win knocks Lewis & Clark three games behind Pacific Lutheran for the fourth and final tournament berth in the Northwest Conference. The Pioneers had defeated Puget Sound 76-69 when the two met last month in Tacoma, and a win on Friday would have given Lewis & Clark the tiebreaker between the two teams. Instead, the Loggers stay one game ahead of Pacific Lutheran for third place behind Whitworth and Whitman.

Trailing 21-19, the Pios closed out the first half with 3-point shots from Kyle Owens, Jason Luhnow and Leonard, outscoring the Loggers 15-8 in the final 8:30 of the period. Leonard punctuated the finish with a coast-to-coast layup at the buzzer, giving him nine first half points.

Overall, there were eight lead changes in the game, with the Pioneers staying ahead until Kyle King scored with just under 12 minutes left in the second half. Neither team took more than a five-point lead for the next six minutes.

Keith Shattuck scored on two straight trips for Puget Sound before Wohrer and Kohl Meyer eventually brought the Loggers ahead by 11 points, 69-58, with 2:31 remaining. Leonard scored seven of the Pios' final 11 points, while Puget Sound made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch.

From the 13:38 mark of the second half, when the Pios were leading 45-43, Wohrer scored 11 points in a span of four and a half minutes.

Prior to Friday night, Wohrer's season highs for points and minutes were 12 and 16, respectively. He played 19 minutes against Lewis & Clark.

"We have to evaluate him as a shooter or a driver in the moment," said Leonard about Wohrer's unexpected night. "We have to get to him and find him once we saw how he is shooting. You have to tip your hat to him."

Leonard's prior career-high was 17 points on Jan. 8 against George Fox, when he made 6 of 13 from the field including two 3-pointers. Friday was Leonard's 12th double-digit scoring night since joining Lewis & Clark as a transfer from Cal Poly.

The Pioneers face George Fox on the road Saturday before returning to the Pamplin Sports Center for three of their final four games.
