Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short in High-Scoring Battle With UC Santa Cruz

Andre Treadwell scores 23 points and Yigit Arcan adds 17 in the River Otters’ nonconference matchup.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Lewis & Clark College men's basketball returned to Pamplin Sports Center and fell 95–85 to the University of California - Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Senior Andre Treadwell led the River Otters with 23 points and eight rebounds, while junior Yigit Arcan added a career-high 17 points and seven boards.
 
Sophomore Marcus Bast and senior Justin White chipped in 12 points each. Bast finished with a team-high four assists, and White led the Otts with three steals. Junior Joe Brown scored 10 points, collected four rebounds, two steals and a block.
 
Lewis & Clark opened with early scoring from White and Treadwell, who combined for nine of the team's first 12 points. Treadwell scored inside off a pass from White for a 12–6 lead with 16:05 left in the half.
 
UC Santa Cruz responded with interior production from Caden Breznikar (19 points) and Leo Wagner (20 points). The visitors tied the game at 12–12 before Brown knocked down a three-pointer at 13:57 to put the Otts back in front. The Banana Slugs later moved ahead 19–17 on a Conley three-pointer with 12:01 remaining.
 
Lewis & Clark stayed within one possession for most of the half and tied the score four times, but could not regain the lead. Arcan posted 10 first-half points, including a transition layup that tied the game at 24–24 and another basket off a turnover that cut the deficit to 31–30 with 1:54 left. UC Santa Cruz closed the half with a three-pointer from Elijah Brookes to take a 36–35 edge into the break.
 
The Banana Slugs created early separation in the second half, scoring 10 points in the first three minutes. They extended their lead to 54–44 after the first media timeout and reached their largest margin at 68–53 with 9:48 remaining.
 
Lewis & Clark put together a 9–0 run to pull within 78–72 at the 3:18 mark. Arcan made two free throws after a flagrant foul on Joe Espy (24 points), and Bast followed with a driving layup. Treadwell and Brown each hit late threes, but the comeback fell short.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Bast scored 10 of his 12 points after halftime.
  • Despite being outsized, the River Otters out-blocked the Banana Slugs 3-2 with senior Taien Jackson, White and Brown each blocking shots.
  • Lewis & Clark scored 15 points off of 11 UCSC turnovers.
  • Jackson and senior Kody Uyesugi scored five points each, with junior Jammial Hicks Jr. hitting one of two free throws to round out the River Otters' scoring.

Lewis & Clark enters a 13-day break before beginning a two-game trip to Texas. The River Otters face LeTourneau University on Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
