TACOMA, Wash. -- The top and bottom singles matches, as well as two doubles pairings, were won without giving up a point, as the No. 29 Lewis & Clark Pioneers defeated Puget Sound 8-1 in a Northwest Conference dual on Sunday at the Tennis Pavilion.
Playing in the No. 1 spot, Aurora Garrison (2-3) defeated Elizabeth Chao 6-0, 6-0, while sophomore Natalie Kelly (1-0) won her first top six match of the season, 6-0, 6-0, over Mei Roen at the sixth position.
Garrison was also part of an 8-0 win in doubles, as she paired with Kacey Incerpi (2-0) to win the No. 2 match-up over Tressa Bild and Sophie Geha. Carla Thomas and Vika O'Brien (1-1) were also 8-0 winners in the No. 3 match over Kyla Richards and Roen.
"Doubles really set the tone for the day, as our women came out aggressive and confident," said Lewis & Clark assistant coach Jimmy Chau. "After dropping the first two games, Claudia Lew and Christine Eliazo reeled off eight straight and their teammates followed suit with 8-0 victories of their own.
"With the 3-0 jump start, we played loose and aggressive, which is usually a great recipe for success."
The dual win keeps Lewis & Clark perfect this spring at 6-0.
Eliazo (6-0) won her highest singles match of the season. The sophomore defeated Nicole Bouche 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 position. Her doubles partner, Lew (5-0), was a straight sets winner over Geha in the third spot.
Eliazo (pictured right) and Lew (3-3) won the top doubles pairing over Chao and Bouche 8-2.
O'Brien (2-0) was also a winner in the No. 4 singles spot, winning the first set 6-1 before Bild withdrew. Lewis & Clark's only loss came when Thomas (0-1) had to retire after a 6-1, first set loss to Richards in the No. 5 match.
Lewis & Clark returns home on Saturday to face Willamette for its only competition of the week.
