PORTLAND, Ore. -- Cheering came from three courts away inside the Tennis Dome as Wiktoria Plawska scored match point to defeat Cello Lockwood and seal Lewis & Clark's 7-2 Northwest Conference dual victory over the Whitman Missionaries on Friday night.
The loss is the first for the Missionaries in NWC duals since 2012, and the first for the Pioneers over Whitman since at least 2009. Whitman had won 39 consecutive regular season duals.
"It was awesome. It was a three-setter, and almost three hours, and I really had to focus to win every point," said Plawska, who is 3-0 in singles matches this season. "I was looking at the scores of everybody else and it was awesome to know that our team had beaten Whitman for the first time in a long time."
Lewis & Clark (3-0 NWC) swept the doubles matches, getting their most decisive wins by Kacey Incerpi and Plawska (2-1) over Allie Wallin and Jenna Gilbert, and Aurora and Summer Garrison (3-0) over Lockwood and Jenna Dobrin, with both Pios pairs winning 8-4. The matches were tight early before Lewis & Clark was able to pull away past the midway point. Claudia Lew (pictured right) and Christine Eliazo (1-2) won their first doubles match of the spring season with an 8-5 decision against Hanna Greenberg and Mary Hill.
"It was a perfect start," said Plawska. "We normally don't sweep doubles, so we were all being intense and focused, and we knew this was a big match, so we went into it with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and that showed up in our results."
"Whitman is the team to beat in our conference, and they have been," said Lewis & Clark head coach Patrick Dreves. "We came out tough in doubles to go up 3-0, and that makes all the difference."
Summer Garrison (3-0) stayed perfect as the nation's No. 7 singles player, following up a 4-6 first set loss to Dobrin with back-to-back 6-3 wins in the final two sets in the top singles pairing. Her win gave Lewis & Clark a 4-2 lead in the dual after Aurora Garrison (0-3) lost to Hill in the No. 2 spot and Incerpi (0-3) was defeated by Wallin in the No. 4 match-up. Both were decided in three sets.
Playing in the No. 5 spot, Lew (3-0) didn't drop a game in an opening 6-0 set win against Lindsey Brodeck before closing out the match with a 7-5 set. Eliazo (3-0) wrapped up the evening with a 5-7, 6-1, (10-5) victory over Greenberg.
Playing their first spring matches of the season, freshman Vika O'Brien (0-1) fell 7-6 to Jenna Gilbert, while Glenna Gee-Taylor (1-0) defeated Lori Sheng 6-2 in exhibition matches. The Pios duo lost 8-5 to Sheng and Brodeck in an exhibition doubles match.
By the time O'Brien and Gee-Taylor were wrapping up their singles matches, their Pioneers teammates were courtside celebrating a dominate performance against the three-time defending NWC champions.
"What's nice about this team is we have some players who have been there before," said Dreves. "A lot of these women experienced the 5-4 loss in the conference finals, and know what that feels like. We have some veterans, and they've been there before, and they didn't panic."
"The home matches are easier for us because we have support of students and faculty," said Plawska. "It's going to be tougher at Whitman, but we did beat them 7-2, and we're going to keep on working very hard."
The teams face one another again on Apr. 2 in Walla Walla, Wash., with the cumulative score between the two duals most likely determining the tiebreaker between the two teams.
Lewis & Clark faces Whitworth on Saturday at noon to wrap up the weekend.
