Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers used a season-high 54 percent shooting and 12 3-pointers to build a 29-point halftime lead, and through strong bench play in the second half, won 88-49 over the Portland Bible Wildcats at the Portland Bible Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Jason Luhnow hit 4 of his first 6 3-pointers in the opening half on his way to 20 points. He finished 6 of 11 from 3-point range, as the Pioneers were 12 of 29 overall. Cannen Roberson scored 13 points for his 10th double-digit game of the season, and freshman Kyle Owens posted his first career double figures game with 12 points. Owens was 4 of 8 from 3-point range.
The Pioneers outscored the Wildcats 45-3 off the bench. In addition to Owens' 12 points, Lewis & Clark got nine points from Skout Roberson in eight minutes played. Jonathan Boddie scored seven points, Kristian Grobecker added six points to go with a game-best five assists, and Kupa'a Harrison and Mat Collins put in four points each. Adrian Romero went 1 of 2 from 3-point range to finish with three points.
"It took us a couple minutes to knock the rust off, but this game was good to work on the details we need to get right going into league," said Grobecker, who played a season-high 18 minutes. "This game was more about us. It's more about our team improving right now rather than what other teams are doing."
Starters Alex Jones and Carl Appleton scored eight and two points, respectively.
Matt Martin had 16 points and Troy Flanagan added 12 points to lead Portland Bible (0-15).
Lewis & Clark (4-6; 0-2 NWC) opened the game shooting 57 percent in the opening half. The Pioneers' 54 percent shooting overall was their highest since an 87-80 loss at Whitman last month. Against Portland Bible, the Pios shot 41 percent from 3-point range, their best since making 15 of 30 against Valley Forge on Nov. 13.
Despite only leading for 10 seconds, after Cody Rowley made a game-opening 3-pointer, the winless Wildcats kept the game close in the opening seven minutes. Portland Bible trailed 12-11 with 13:57 remaining in the opening half before Lewis & Clark went on an 11-1 run in the next four minutes.
The Pios continued to distance themselves through defense, holding Portland Bible without a field goal for five minutes and extending an 8-point lead to 30 by the 2:28 mark of the first half. Lewis & Clark made four 3-pointers during that stretch, including three from Luhnow.
"This game was a test going into league to see if we could do the things we've been working on in practice," said Grobecker.
The win moves Lewis & Clark to 4-6 this season, and 4-4 against non-conference opponents. Northwest Conference play resumes on Friday when the Pios host George Fox at 8 p.m.
