Lewis & Clark shoots season-high from 3-point range to beat Linfield

Box Score

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. -- At one point in Tuesday night's game against Linfield, Lewis & Clark's Cannen Roberson had missed only one shot in eight tries. The junior guard's shooting night paced the Pioneers, who as a whole matched a season-best 54 percent from the floor, to defeat the home team Wildcats 79-73 at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.

Roberson finished with a game-high 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting, his best performance when taking 10 or more attempts since making 10 of 13 against George Fox on Jan. 24, 2015. He now has four 20-plus point games this season, including two straight and three of his last five.

Teammate Jason Luhnow scored 13 points, his fifth consecutive game in double figures, making 5 of 11 shots.

"It was a great win on the road against a team that showed a lot of resilience, especially towards the end," said Roberson. "We were able to swing the ball and pound it inside, and we found a lot of success. Shooters were able to hit some big shots as well."

The Pios made 5 of 8 from 3-point range in the first half to build a 36-29 halftime lead, on their way to a season-best 57 percent from long distance.

Most of the Lewis & Clark (6-7; 2-3 Northwest Conference) starting lineup saw a season-high shooting percentage in some capacity. Markel Leonard and Alex Jones, who each scored nine points, made season-bests 43 and 75 percent from 3-point range, respectively. While Carl Appleton didn't have as much success from the floor, he did make 4 of 7 from the free-throw line, his top percentage this season when taking more than one attempt.

As a team, the Pioneers had one of their best free-throw performances of the season, making 71 percent. It's only the fourth time this year the Pios have been above 70 percent, and the first time in four games.

"At the end we were able to make the plays necessary to win like free throws and big rebounds. It's a great game to learn from moving forward," said Roberson.

As a 17-point Lewis & Clark lead evaporated in the final six minutes of the game - the Wildcats went on a 19-6 run - the Pioneers were held without a rebound. Leading 75-71 with 1:30 left, Cory Coombe (pictured right) grabbed two offensive rebounds to force Linfield (6-7; 1-4 NWC) to foul to try and get the ball back. The Pios shot 4 of 6 from the line down the stretch.

Kyle Maloof scored 14 points, and Mason Rodby added 12, to lead the Wildcats, who have lost three of their last four games.

After starting the season 2-7, the Pioneers have won four of their last five. Lewis & Clark has one more game this week, traveling to Pacific Lutheran on Friday at 8 p.m.
