WALLA WALLA, Wash. – In one of the best matches of the season, the #29 Lewis & Clark women's tennis team faced off against #23 Whitman is the Northwest Conference Championship match on Saturday afternoon. After coming back from behind, the Pioneers eventually fell to Missionaries 5-4.
The Pioneers headed into singles down 3-0.
Claudia Lew earned the Pioneers their first point of the match with a huge 6-2, 6-2 win over Lindsey Brodeck in the No. 6 spot.
Freshman Christine Eliazo made it 3-2 after winning her match at the No. 5 spot. Eliazo took the first set 7-5, before ending it 7-6 in the second. The Pio freshman earned the win in the second set after Erin Bell double-faulted at match point.
Morgan Lawless put the Missionaries up 4-2 after defeating Wiktoria Plawska 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 position.
Playing as the No. 2, Aurora Garrison made quick work of Jenna Dobrin in the first set, winning 6-3. Garrison led the entire second set but only managed a one game lead until the end when she collected a 7-5 victory.
Summer Garrison duked it out with Courtney Lawless in the No. 1 spot with the Pioneer freshman falling 2-6 in the opening set. Garrison settled down in the second set to cruise to a 6-2 win. The third and final set saw the pair tied at 5-5, before Garrison pulled ahead to take the match 7-5.
With the match tied at 4-4, it all came down to Kacey Incerpi and Allie Wallin in the No. 4 spot. The match saw a lot of long rallies with neither wanting to lose. Wallin managed to pull out a 6-3 (7-2) win in the opening set before Incerpi took the second set 6-3. In the third and deciding set, Wallin started down early and moved ahead before Incerpi made fewer unforced errors to take the lead. With Incerpi leading 5-4, Wallin came back to take a 6-5 lead. However, the Pioneer freshman fought her way back to tie the contest at 6-6. In the tiebreaker Wallen took a 4-0 lead and then managed to pull out the win with Incerpi hitting into the net.
