PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's tennis team continued its stellar season on Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 win over Pacific.
The Pioneers, who are ranked 36th in the nation and eighth in the West Region, improve to 6-2 on the season and 4-0 in the Northwest Conference. The Boxers, who are ranked 19th in the region, fall to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the NWC.
In doubles, the Pioneers came out firing on all cylinders. The duo of
Christine Eliazo and
Kacey Incerpi went up super early in the No. 1 spot against a very strong doubles team of Jelena Vidovic and Kaitlyn Lomartire who were ranked #11 in the region as a doubles pair. The pair came out firing and found themselves up 5-0 in a flash. They duo letup a bit and let the Boxers back into the match before closing it out 8-4 for the team sweep in doubles. The Pios made easy work in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions like they have all season.
Summer Garrison led the way for the team in singles as she quickly took the first set 6-0 first set against Lomartire who's #10 in the region. The second set proved to be much closer, but the freshman proved that she will be a force in the conference as she steadied toward the end to close it out 6-4.
The No. 2, 3 and 4 singles positions were a challenge with Vidovic, Sidney Smith, and Mai Kobayashi making some noise in their own matches for the Boxers. The Pios did thwart the comeback attempt with gutty first set performances by Claudia Lew and Glenna Gee-Taylor. Lew wrapped up her first set 7-5 and Gee-Taylor took hers 6-4, as Vidovic claimed the first in a close 7-5 set against Aurora Garrison.
Spurring each other on in the second, Lew and Gee-Taylor cruised to 6-0 victories almost simultaneously to claim the match for the Pios. Up 6-0 as a team, Garrison wouldn't be as fortunate as she fell to Vidovic who is ranked #22 in the region 6-2 in the second. Eliazo and
Gillian Lowe rounded out the scoring 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1 respectively to close out the 8-1 win for the Pioneers.
Next up for the Pios is George Fox at home on Sunday, March 8 at 11 a.m.
