#31 Women's Tennis Defeats Cal Lutheran 8-1

By Jimmy Chau
Assistant Coach

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Lewis & Clark women's tennis team picked up their second win on their SoCal road trip as they took down a tough Cal Lutheran squad 8-1.  The Pios, newly ranked at #31in the nation, got a spirited effort from the Regals.

Doubles action started out close on all three courts. With neither team being able to pull away early, both squads settled in for a long fight. Breaks of serve went back and forth on all three courts until Christine Eliazo and Kacey Incerpi, ranked 10th in the region, finally broke through and jumped to a 5-2 lead.

Summer Garrison and Claudia Lew would soon follow suit with their own scrappy play and get out to a 6-3 lead as well.

Things didn't go so well at #3 for the Pios with Rebecca Gold taking over the match and giving the Regals a 7-4 lead. All three matches went according to plan from there and the Pios would take a 2-1 lead going into singles.

In singles action, S. Garrison, now ranked #10 in the region had no trouble at all in dispatching her opponent at the #1 slot in a 6-0, 6-1 win to extend the Pio lead.

Incerpi saw little resistance as well in her match as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the 4 spot. The clinching point though would be tough to come by as all other matches were close.

Glenna Gee-Taylor ran into a buzzsaw at the 5 spot as Annette Sousa came out firing on all cylinders. Before she even knew what hit her, Gee-Taylor dropped the first set 6-0 and had to regroup. Meanwhile though, Eliazo was returning the favor for the Pios as she took her first in the same 6-0 fashion but this time for the Pios.

Aurora Garrison had a much tougher battle but would take the first 6-1 soon after.  In the marathon match of the night, Lew would still only be four games in to her match as she and Emily Werman would have the most epic of rallies.

As Gee-Taylor finally got her bearings straight and took the second set 6-2, Shelby Kubota would rally to a second set tie-breaker win to put both #5 and #6 singles into third sets.

One game into the third set in those matches, Lew would come up with a huge forehand winner to take only her first set. The depth of the Pios shone through down low as Gee-Taylor would methodically take down her opponent in the third with a 6-2 clincher that would secure the match for the Pios.

Eliazo struggled at the outset of the third set but pulled it together to win 6 out of the last 7 games and put another win on the board for the Pios.

A. Garrison would find herself in a marathon second as well as she took a very competitive second set 7-6 (3) in the breaker to bring the score to 7-1 for the Pios.

In the match that seemed to last an eternity, Lew dropped her second set 6-3 against Werman and would finish under the lights in a match breaker.  Momentum seemed to swing both ways for most of the match-breaker until Lew finally outlasted her opponent 10-8 to complete the 8-1 victory for the Pios.

L&C travels to Occidental next to take on the Tigers on Saturday.
