Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. -- A 6-yard touchdown pass from Niko Fortino to Dennis Kamakana with six seconds remaining in the first half was Lewis & Clark's first score of the day, as the Pioneers fell 47-19 to Whitworth at the Pine Bowl on Saturday afternoon.
Whitworth scored points on six of its first seven drives to build a 37-6 halftime lead to improve to 10-1 on the season, keeping the Pirates hope for an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs alive.
Fortino started the game at quarterback, leading the Pioneers into Whitworth territory on Lewis & Clark's second and third possessions, but couldn't come up with points.
After a 46-yard field goal by Whitworth's Rehn Reiley put the home team Pirates up 37-0, Fortino and the offense started at the Lewis & Clark 25-yard line. Fortino went 6 of 9 on the drive including a 21-yard completion to Carl Appleton to put the Pios in the red zone before throwing the score to Kamakana. Senior running back Josh Bocker had two carries for 11 yards on the drive, finishing his final career game with 51 yards rushing, his most since getting 58 yards on Sept. 19 against Pomona-Pitzer.
Bocker also scored a touchdown, getting in from two yards out in the third quarter to cap off a 10-play, 80-yard drive to make the score 44-12 at the end of the quarter.
Lewis & Clark's final scoring drive ended when freshman Andrew Paquin scored his first career touchdown, a 1-yard run to complete an 11-play, 63-yard drive. Fortino completed passes of 26, 11 and 19 yards on the drive to Appleton, Dejour Williams and Bryce Johnson, respectively.
Fortino finished 23 of 44 for 242 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Appleton led all receivers with 6 catches and had a team-high 90 yards.
Along with Bocker's 51 yards rushing, freshman Marquis Stepteau carried the ball eight times for 29 yards.
Whitworth quarterback Ian Kolste finished 21 of 27 for 341 yards and four touchdowns. Garrett McKay had 87 yards receiving on four receptions. Chris Forrest caught two touchdowns, while Mason Elms and Nick Kioukas had one apiece. Casey Bond had a team-best 13 rushes for 63 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Brownell scored a rushing TD as well.
The game marked the end of the first season under head coach Jay Locey, who won a Division III national championship in 2004 while the head coach of Linfield. Lewis & Clark is scheduled to lose 17 players off its 68-player roster.
