Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Lewis & Clark football team traveled to California for its second game of the season, taking on Claremon-Mudd-Scripps Saturday night. The Pioneers were unable to come out with the win, falling 36-14 despite going into the fourth quarter tied 14-14.
The Pioneers freshman quarterback Cody Rochon showed promise, once again leading the team in rushing with 82 yards on 16 carries. Behind center Rochon was 21-of-41 for 215 yards which included a touchdown to sophomore Michael Hawkins. Freshman Eric Hawkins was the Pios next leading rusher with 31 yards on just four carries, scoring the Pioneers other touchdown.
Senior Zac Salois ended the day with 103 yards on nine receptions, while M. Hawkins finished with 83 receiving yards.
Andrew Traver led the Pioneer defense with 10 tackles, including a tackle for a loss of two yards. Josh Cena and Stein Retzlaff each had eight tackles on the day, while Roy Taylor picked up seven tackles one of which was for a loss of two yards.
Claremont struck first with a short nine-yard run by Nick Gott in the first quarter. The Pioneers finally got on the board in with four and a half minutes left in the second half with a 13-yard run by E. Hawkins. The Pioneer drive began on their own 22-yard line and shaw them march 78 yards in 4:18.
Lewis & Clark put the pressure on at the start of the second half, trailing 14-7, with an on-side kick that was recovered by S. Retzlaff on their own 46-yard line. It took the Pios just five plays to tie the contest; on 4th and 1 with Rochon connecting with M. Hawkins on a 25-yard pass.
The Stags responded on their next possession with a touchdown of their own with a 78-yard catch and run. Claremont would go onto score two more times before the end of the contest.
The Pioneers had some chances late in the fourth quarter but came up short on opportunities.
"We had a lot of young guys playing tonight and I was impressed with their poise and desire," said head coach Chris Sulages.
Lewis & Clark retuns to California on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 12 p.m. against Whittier.
