SALEM, Ore- The Lewis & Clark baseball team squared off against non-conference opponent Corban in a double-header of seven innings each Tuesday, losing game one 3-8 and game two 1-2. The Pioneers move to 9-19-1, while the Warriors move to 24-7.
Game One:
Stein Retzlaff (0-1) takes the loss for the Pioneers pitching five innings allowing eight runs on eleven hits, while walking two and striking out three. Ben Beck also saw time on the mound for the Pioneers. Adam Shumka (1-0) takes the win for the Warriors pitching three innings. Jacob Kopra, Austin Reames, and Daniel Aranda also saw time on the mound for the Warriors.
The Pioneers jumped out of the gates quick in game one scoring all three runs in the first inning of the game. Beck began the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a Jacob Burton sacrifice that was mishandled by the pitcher. Another sacrifice bunt resulting in a fielders' choice loaded the bases by Corey Davis. Hayden Higger then stepped to the plate ripping a double down the right field line scoring both Beck and Burton. Eric Hyun then reached on a fielding error that scored Davis for the third and final run of the game for the Pioneers.
The Warriors began their comeback in the bottom of the second scoring six runs on seven hits, while using one error to their advantage. Two more runs came in the fourth using two hits and a walk to take their total to eight.
The Pioneers came up with four hits, while the Warriors finished with twelve.
Game Two:
Ryan Strombom (1-5) takes the loss for the Pioneers pitching five and two thirds innings giving up two runs on just three hits, while walking five and striking out three. Severiano Villarruel also saw time on the mound. Eli Driessen (1-2) takes the win for the Warriors, while Ryan Morgan gets his first save of the season.
Game two was quiet until the fifth inning when the Pioneers struck first again. Matthew Cathcart reached first on a fielding error by the third baseman, advanced to second on a ground out, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop. Burton tacked up the only RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Cathcart.
The Warriors rally came in the sixth scoring two runs on one hit and an error. The inning began with a walk that with a quick double down the line scored. Another walk and a throwing error scored the Warriors second and final run to take the game 2-1.
The Pioneers finished with five hits, while the Warriors only managed three.
The Pioneers are back on the field in Tacoma when they play Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action Saturday April 12 in a double-header beginning at noon.
